Where Have All The Comments Gone?

You may have noticed that any comment made prior to site launch has disappeared. The truth is that we have around 3,200 old comments that we’d like to migrate from Haloscan (an online comment manager) to Wordpress.

[This is where techie-talk begins] The problem is that the URL format Wordpress uses is different from the URL format Blogger or Haloscan uses. Which means that it would be extremely difficult (if not impossible) to assign the old comments to the correct posts. [This is where techie-talk ends]

We have our brilliant friend, David Boskovic, working on this problem. However, if any other tech-wizards read our blog we’d appreciate all the input we can get.

As a general note, we are still in the process of working out bugs that have resulted from our blog migration. We’d appreciate grace as we attempt to get everything formatted right and linked right. We’d also appreciate your help in alerting us to problems. May God richly bless you.

I`ll be praying for you guys! The new site looks great.I think it`s awesome how the fellowship between everyone is still the same.New look, same heart.

Hi guys. Actually, while it may be time-consuming, it’s never ‘extremely difficult (if not impossible)’ to convert comments or anything else from one site to another. I converted my Haloscan comments to my own MySQL-based system using regular expressions and a script. It was pretty painless, actually. You can give David my email if he wants to discuss it. I’m also Canadian, so we can skip using a translator, eh?

  3. David Boskovic Says:

Actually Randy, I wasn’t going to transfer the comments. I was just going to transfer the links to the haloscan comments, which isn’t that hard. Alex was cool to ask for suggestions, it might be nicer to get the actual comments… does haloscan have comment feeds for the individual posts?

Btw Randy, my email is contact @ onewaypurpose.com.

    Canadians rockin’ up the homefront.

Running straight to MySQL is the way I’d go too.

If you happen to have been running the premium version of Haloscan, this hack is a quick and painless (enough) option too: http://justinsomnia.org/2005/06/importing-haloscan-comments-into-wordpress/

I`ve been trying to register on the forum, but the code in the regostration page can`t be seen.I don`t know if its my computer or the page.I`ll keep on trying …

  6. Alex Jordan Harris Says:

Thanks for the heads up, Cristina. Several people have mentioned that there’s been a problem with the confirmation code, but we’re not sure what’s wrong. What browser are you using?

    Anyone else having this problem?

  7. Nate M. Hanson Says:

Alex, I believe the problem lies in the fact that the confirmation code is case sensitive (i.e., you must match the correct case of each letter in order for it to be successful.) This solves one of the problems. The other problem, however, will never be solved—zeros and the letter “O” look all too similar.

Another item to note is the justified alignment in the comments. You can see in Jonathan James’ comment on this page that the justified alignment caused the word-spacing to stretch, compensating for the link. You sacrifice aesthetics with left-align, but you forfeit the ease of reading with justified alignment. You can go either way on this one. I tend to shy away from justified alignment for this reason, but those who do use it have a super spiffy looking site ninety-nine percent of the time.

Alex, I just wanted to let you know that I emailed you about what Christina was talking about yesterday, but tried again today, and it works now. Anyone having that problem yesterday may want to try again? :) I’m so excited about the changes you all are making to the Rebelution. They are changes for the better, in my opinion! :D

  9. Nate M. Hanson Says:

Ah, I didn’t read Christina’s comment. Regardless, I had trouble with the confirmation code simply because of the case sensitivity and the zeros.

Toward the end of the episode, a parallel scene occurs as Keith finds Veronica in the Mars Investigation office at night, where she has discovered that Keith has been keeping information from her. ,
