This is a great discussion. I agree mostly with Christina. However, free will is not "a myth created by man because he is uncomfortable with God’s sovereignty to save and damn whomever He pleases". The Bible makes it clear that man does have free will and we are not puppets. Think of Adam and Eve. They made the CHOICE to eat the fruit. Did God know what was going to happen? Yes. Did he have it all under control? Yes. Did he cause them to eat the fruit? No. This is just the first example. The Bible makes it clear that salvation requires a choice on part. We have free will. A trap that Calvinists can fall into is not realizing the validity of free will because we place so much emphasis on God's sovereignty

I am a Calvinist so I also believe in the doctrines of predestination and election. A few verses to add: Eph. 1:3-14, Rom 8:29-30, 2 Thess. 2:13-14, 2 Tim. 1:9-10. Note that most of the verses of Christina's were in John and spoken by Jesus. If you consider the context it is clear he is not simply talking about Jews but all those who would gain salvation obviously including Gentiles. As to a person's relationship with God being shown by the fruits I agree completely. The fruits show that a person is one of God's sheep, elect, children, however you want to put it. You know that you are a Christian (and therefore one of the elect) if you can tell that God is working in you. Predestination/ Election seems harsh and unfair but consider that none deserve salvation so the fact that God gives salvation to some is truly wonderful. Also realize that its not like someone will want to be saved and believe but won't be able to. It is God that puts the desire there because a person is one of the elect.

It seems that I just contradicted myself and the Bible contradicts itself. HOWEVER, this is an area where we have to realize that it is a MYSTERY. Somehow free will AND election are both completely true. We just have to realize that God's wisdom is infinitely greater than ours and believe what he says even if we simply cannot understand because we are humans. This is what I believe the Bible clearly lays down but, "Each one should be convinced in his own mind"(Rom. 14:5a). I am not going to pass judgement on someone because they do not have exactly my view, but I still am convinced that what I have laid out here is what the Bible teaches. Read Romans 14 for more clarification.

This has helped me and I hope it helps anyone who may read it

By the way, the video was excellent.

In Christ,

Christina,

i just read your blog but i am afraid i disagree...Jesus states that ALL have sinned & fallen short of the glory of God. Therefore we can make no claim that we are better or worse than anyone else. If you believe that only certain people are saved, how can you trust in your own salvation? How do you know if God chose you to go to heaven? I agree that we have no guarantee that our friends or family are saved (for who can know the heart of a man but God?) but i believe that by the fruit of their lives i can see God CLEARYLY evident. Also, when God refers to his own people that was before the time when gentiles were accepted as well as Jews right? Christ gave his disciples the great commission & the apostle Paul spread the gospel to both jews & gentiles....

In Christ,
Kiley
p.s. i really enjoyed stop & think-it was so inspirational!

The Bible says that God loves everyone in the sense that "He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust" (Matt. 5:45). However, the Bible is quite clear on the fact that He has a special, redeeming love for those He calls to salvation. After all, He sent His Son to die for His elect, not everyone. There are a slew of Bible verses to back this up, which I will quote in a minute, but first, let's look at the issue logically. If God sent Jesus to die for everyone's sins, then everyone would be saved. We know that everyone is NOT saved; some go to hell where they are punished for their sins. So, if Jesus died for all, and some are not saved, then His death would be ineffectual: people whom He had cleansed of their sins would be experiencing punishment for those sins in hell. Well, the Bible is quite clear that Jesus' death IS effective, redeeming us from hell by paying for our sins. Since all of this is true, then free will is a myth created by man because he is uncomfortable with God's sovereignty to save and damn whomever He pleases. Read Romans 9 for proof that He does just that. He is the Creator, and we are the created; He has every right to do with His creation as He so chooses. Consider the following verses: "For the transgression of MY PEOPLE He was stricken." (Is. 53:8); "You are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save HIS PEOPLE from their sins." (Matt. 1:21); "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for THE SHEEP." (John 10:11); "You do not believe because you are not part of MY FLOCK. MY SHEEP hear my voice, and I know THEM, and THEY follow Me. I give THEM eternal life, and THEY will never perish, and no one will snatch THEM out of My hand." (John 10:26-28)"Glorify Your Son, that Your Son may glorify You. For You granted to Him authority over all people that He might give eternal life to ALL THOSE YOU HAVE GIVEN HIM...I pray for THEM. I am not praying for the world." (John 17:1-2, 9). These are only a few; I recommend reading "The Doctrines of Grace", "A Journey in Grace", and "Grace Unknown" to gain a further Biblical grasp of this issue. Also, pay attention to the men of God represented on this site: John Piper, C.J. Mahaney, Josh Harris, Al Mohler, and John MacArthur -- all of whom ascribe to these Reformed doctrines.
