Epistemologically Self-Conscious Filmmaking

In the late afternoon session, Part 2 of Biblical Worldview and the Theology of Christian Filmmaking, Doug Phillips set out to present a biblical epistemology for Christian filmmakers.
‘Epistemology’ is defined as “the theory of knowledge.” Or as Mr. Phillips says, “the origin and process of human knowledge.” In a very real sense, he argued, your view of knowledge and the way you think and process information is the foundation of your worldview.
In light of this, Mr. Phillips emphasized the following throughout his talk: Christians filmmakers must be theologians. This was a point that Brett and I appreciated immensely. The truth is that if Christians desire to change their culture for Christ in any area, whatever it may be, they must first embrace a biblical worldview. They must be Christian theologians.
This was what Mr. Phillips meant when he said that Christian filmmakers must be “epistemologically self-conscious.” Because of the culture in which we live today, where anti-biblical worldviews are so prevalent and engrained, Christians involved in the arts must be constantly on guard. There is no neutral art.
A second point that Mr. Phillips made was the importance for Christians to pursue, not just godly character, but also competence—a foundational principle of the Rebelution. Christians must not only have a thoroughly biblical worldview, they must also have the ability to communicate it with skill.
“Largely, Christian films for the last 20 years stink,” Mr. Phillips said. “They’re cheesy, they’re poorly made, and they’re not thought through.” If our desire is to glorify God through our films, we must pursue excellence.
Brett and I appreciate so much the dedication of the Academy faculty to advancing the kingdom of God through films that are theologically, philosophically, and aesthetically biblical.
Next up, a joint session between Doug Phillips and Isaac Botkin on New Project Markets and Production Types.

Alex and Brett,
Hi. First off, a big thank you for this site. It has inspired me a lot. It is really wonderful to see God’s hands at work through the efforts of many young Christians whose posts and comments I read almost everyday.
I dream of spreading the Christian film-making zeal in the Philippines someday; and I appreciate your efforts to blog this event despite connection challenges. I wish I were there. Soon…
Don’t forget to have fun….

Truly, this is facinating! It is so true, and while I would love to make films I know my job for now is to support those who are making quality christian films that would impact this world. I think that this movement of faith-based film is not just limited to film. I believe that somehow God is calling many people to the media mediums to stand strong and unshakable before this generation. Whether it be through journalisn, creative writing, music, or film God is indeed doing great things. There are amazing things happening, I`m just so blessed to be a part of it.
