Geoff Botkin: The Lowering Cost of Film Equipment

gb_session2.jpgAt the beginning of this first morning session, Production Process of Public Affairs Documentary, Geoff Botkin shares how much more expensive film equipment was 20-30 years ago.

Back when he was a teenager one dissolve transition would take two weeks to complete and cost $2,000. A decent camera cost $65,000 in the 1980’s, a recording deck was $60,000, and a switcher (for transitions) cost $30,000. All together, a basic set of film equipment would cost over $300,000.

Have they talked about how to obtain sponsorship yet? That’s how you afford to pay for the movie at first. Of course you have to pay the sponsors some money after you have made profit.
