Senator John Kerry: Video and Cartoon
Alex and I turned eighteen three days ago. That means we’ll be voting for the first time this November. Though we haven’t made politics a frequent topic on The Rebelution, we have several reasons for bringing this story to your attention.
Massachusetts Senator John Kerry committed a major blunder on Monday when he told a group of college students in California that if they don’t work hard to be smart they’ll “get stuck in Iraq.” Whether it was a jab at the intelligence of US Troops or a seriously botched attempt to poke fun at the Bush Administration, Senator Kerry’s choice of words, one week before a pivotal election, was unbelievably ill-advised.
So, though I have never done so before, Senator Kerry’s blunder inspired me to draw a political cartoon. Your feedback is appreciated. Enjoy.

The cartoon is funny but has a punch!
It’s sad though that it dosn’t just poke fun at young people and the Bush Administration but at the Iraqi war as well. It’s a series of events that has taken lives, disrupted families and carry grave implications for a lot of people; certainly it deserves more respect than be used as a bogeyman to scare lazy students.

Bwhahahaha, that was great.
November 1st, 2006 at 4:19 am
Well done! That was really funny!
November 1st, 2006 at 4:30 am
Well done, Brett. I love it!
November 1st, 2006 at 4:31 am
Good one. You should be a political cartoonist. We need a few of them who arn’t so biased.
November 1st, 2006 at 4:57 am
This is great - it really is. I may have to share this with a few people… just for kicks.
November 1st, 2006 at 4:59 am
Ha. Love the cartoon.
I’m not sure if I’ll ever vote or not. I probably won’t, as my grandfather thinks only men should vote anyway, and if I do, it’ll be when I married. That way my husband can tell me who to vote for.
Good job on the cartoon!! Love it.
November 1st, 2006 at 5:17 am
Happy belated birthday!
November 1st, 2006 at 5:22 am
heh, btw, happy late birthday!!

Thanks for posting that video; I’ve been wanting to see it. Unbelievable.
Great job on the cartoon, and happy birthday!
November 1st, 2006 at 5:34 am
I hate it that such a stupid man is our state senator. Good job with the cartoon and Happy Birthday!
November 1st, 2006 at 6:37 am
Definitely one to keep for posterity!
November 1st, 2006 at 6:45 am
I still can’t believe he said that. Oh wait, yes I can…what else would I expect from him?! Excellent cartoon and happy birthday
November 1st, 2006 at 7:03 am
luv the cartoon and Happy belated B-day! My b-day was yesterday how weird!
November 1st, 2006 at 8:01 am
Americans are allowed the freedom of speech and opinion. Although many people disagree with him, Kerry had every right to say his opinion. There are some democrats (including myself) who are rather embarassed that Kerry has resorted to mudslinging. In a public forum with a younger voting demographic, such as this college, he may of thought he was being “cool.”
Unfortunately, many college students and those of us who are college-aged would prefer less slander and more truth. Afterall, I often find myself wondering if I’ll ever find out what a politician’s actual viewpoints on how to deal with important issues are over their personal opinion of other politicians. Don’t tell me what you think of others, tell me what you think of how to deal with the situations. Otherwise, we’re all just going in self-destructing circles.
That rant aside (my apologies for it being so long), the comic was well-done for being your first political cartoon. Also, happy belated birthday to both you and your brother! yay! 18!!!!
November 1st, 2006 at 8:26 am
Spot on, man. Kerry is insane.
November 1st, 2006 at 8:31 am
[...] Alex and Brett really nailed this one. The cartoon packs a real punch. [...]
November 1st, 2006 at 8:39 am
Well, Happy Birthday Guys!!! My brother turns 17 on Friday, so he has another year before he can vote, but he’s looking forward to it!
I can’t believe John Kerry’s comment!
November 1st, 2006 at 8:52 am
Oh my gosh! I would think one requirement of being a politician is to think before you speak!
Happy Belated, Alex and Brett!

Allie_Ilene, don’t let others think for you. Believe it or not, one person can change a lot! (I’m sure there’s a profound quote about it somewhere) Instead of letting your grandfather and/or future husband think for you, develop your own convictions! Although its a daunting task to learn all about political parties and such, I believe it is one way to honor God. You should go to http://www.teenpact.com. Teen pact has a lot to say about voting and such things, and will probably make this arguement better than I can.
November 1st, 2006 at 8:53 am
Allie_Ilene, use your single years to honor your father as you will your husband one day! What better preparation for marriage? Look to him for guidance now.
If you don’t have a problem with voting under your husband’s direction, consider voting under your father’s direction. If you can use your vote to support his, I would encourage you to do it!
This is my first election being 18, too. = ) Although I would always like to know who I’m voting for, and what he stands for, I will always use my vote to support that of my father’s, and one day of my husband’s.
Great cartoon! It’s almost true!
November 1st, 2006 at 8:58 am
Way cool! I didn’t know you did cartooning.
I must say that for a first your cartoon is really good.
I would enjoy seeing another one if you wanted to post another in the future.

We do need to have convictions, but - as young ladies - it is our responsibility to honor and obey our husbands and fathers as heads and leaders of our families. The Lord has put them over us as our authorities.
Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord. Colossians 3:20
Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as unto the Lord. Ephesians 5:22, Colossians 3:18.
Happy birthday, Alex and Brett. It was interesting to watch you actually doing your live blogging at Vision Forum’s Film Academy and Festival. I got so much out of the Academy and Festival, and went to your blog at the end of each day to get anything I had missed during the sessions. Thanks!
November 1st, 2006 at 9:13 am
That’s a great cartoon, Brett=) I showed it to my mom. She said,
“Write ‘hahahahahahahahaha! :faint:’ ” It provided an excellent morning chuckle:)
Good for you guys for putting out the effort to get registered in time to vote. And happy late birthday to both of you!
November 1st, 2006 at 9:15 am
Kerry’s office claimed he might have mis-pronounced a line of his speech. They said the text actually said:”Do you know where you end up if you don’t study, if you aren’t smart, if you’re intellectually lazy? you end up getting us stuck in a war in Iraq. Just ask President Bush.”
“us” is pretty good keyword, and the mistake explanation sounds plausible. But if it was a mistake, than why did he say at news conference in Seattle: “I apologize to no one for my criticism of the President and his broken policy.”
No words yet from him on his defaming remarks about our awsome troops.
November 1st, 2006 at 9:18 am
PS: Very good cartoon. Well done.
November 1st, 2006 at 9:59 am
Great cartoon and Happy Birthday to you both! Regardless of whether the Iraqi War is wrong or not, many men and women have given up their time, families, friends, comfort, and safety to be in the Army. It was a cruel thing for Senator Kerry to say.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:02 am
Very good cartoon!
Happy Birthday!

Oh, I forgot….Brett, you did a really nice job on your cartoon. Did it take long to do?
November 1st, 2006 at 11:23 am
Ha, great cartoon, Brett! And happy belated birthday to both of you!
November 1st, 2006 at 11:28 am
That’s a good chuckle.
However, don’t you think that however messed up his views and actions may be, we should still show him a certain amount of respect as one of the leaders appointed by God in our nation? Just a thought….
Happy belated birthday guys!
November 1st, 2006 at 11:32 am
Happy belated birthday!!!!!!!
I thank God that He has blessed our nation with a strong Christian in the Oval Office.
I entreat all believers, all rebelutionaries, to pray fervently for Kerry. May God open Kerry’s eyes to see the truth and call him to Himself.
Brett, awesome cartoon!!!! You should seriously consider sending it into the World Magizine. (I love their cartoons.)
November 1st, 2006 at 11:33 am
That is great brett. Good enough to get you banned from “The Oregonian”, at least temporarily.
November 1st, 2006 at 12:40 pm
How funny! I was watching him say similar things on the news this morning. He’s shooting himself ,and his party, in the foot! I’m so glad President Bush doesn’t sink to his level and insult people. Happy Late Birthday!
November 1st, 2006 at 1:28 pm
Happy Birthday(s)! The cartoon is awesome. The Lord bless you!
November 1st, 2006 at 2:00 pm
Having an Uncle who has served 3 times in Iraq, and other friends that are there, that comment makes me dislike Kerry even more. Sometimes I wonder if politicians ever stop once to think!
Love the cartoon Brett! I laughed so hard!
November 1st, 2006 at 2:09 pm
Looks like the cartton has drawn quite the attention. It was great! Very funny.
I am not 18 years old yet, but I would like to add that many people go unquestionably with what their party says. Before we vote, lets think as Americans and less like Democrates or Republicans. Let`s vote for the person who will lead our country towards good morals, not whoever is in our political party.
November 1st, 2006 at 3:41 pm
Greetings! I, a follower of Christ, have been reading your weblog of a while and have found it very encouraging! This is the first time commenting though.
First of all, happy birthday to both of you; second, what an insane quote Senator Kerry made! And… wow… nice cartoon. =)
November 1st, 2006 at 5:50 pm
Great cartoon, Brett. My mom and I both got a kick out of it.
Happy birthday to you two! I just recently turned 18 as well, so I’m looking forward to voting!
Btw, I really enjoy reading this blog. Keep up the great work!
November 1st, 2006 at 6:01 pm
Very funny! I’m going to show that one to my dad - he’ll love it. You should try to get it published in your newspaper…
November 1st, 2006 at 6:03 pm
Great cartoon!
Happy birthday, Alex and Brett!
November 1st, 2006 at 9:29 pm
My brother and I thought that was SO funny. He thinks you should get it published in WORLD.
I join the rest of the people wishing you guys a happy late birthday. Happy voting!
November 2nd, 2006 at 5:48 am
It is a great cartoon. But I agree with Jacqui. John Kerry is a leader that God has placed over us and we should respect him.
Don’t get me wrong though, I do strongly disagree with his views. My brother is in the army and loves it. (He is soooo not stupid.) Plus Kerry has no right to say somthing like that about people who are dying for him! There is a great slideshow circulating through email made by a patiotic army wife about the soldiers in Iraq. It’s quite convicting. You really get to see what they go through over there.
Well, keep up the good work. I really enjoy ready your blog and I’ve learned so much from it.

I saw this on the Ledux before I saw it here, and would have been laughing out loud if I weren’t in a computer lab! The cartoon is absolutely hilarious! What Kerry said was inexcusable and his apology was lame.
November 2nd, 2006 at 11:56 am
Happy Birthday Alex and Brett! I thought the cartoon was fabulous!
I would like to take the opportunity to say thank you for what you’re doing here on this website (blog and forum). I have been so encouraged to consider new ideas with which I was previously unfamiliar, and have changed my feelings about quite a number of issues, in accordance with God’s call on my life. The Lord has molded my heart through this site to raise my standards and thought-plane considerably.
Also, I’m always excited to see people I know personally comment on the blog and post on the forum!!!

Happy Birthday! Congratulations for getting to vote in 2006! (whatever you do…DON’T miss any primary or general elections…ever)
November 3rd, 2006 at 4:12 pm
I’ve read your blog occasionally and really like it! You guys are doing so great! I just wanted to say that your cartoon is hilarious! John Kerry does not deserve to be a senetor if you ask me. The Democratic side of America disgusts me.
Anyway, thanks for your great blog!
November 3rd, 2006 at 4:28 pm
One of the prominent people who are gaining from this “slip up” by Kerry, besides the Republican party, is Hilary Clinton. Now that Kerry is out the presidential race for 2008 and possibly the rest of Kerry’s political future. In other words, now that Kerry is permanently out the race, (nobody survives a bash against the fighting force of the USA no matter what party you’re from) Hilary Clinton has few if not no Democratic rivals the ‘08 presidential race. What a bummer.
Anyway,
Check out how some G.I.’s reacted to Kerry’s remarks on November 2nd.

The tongue is slippery, isn’t it? When it comes down to it, John Kerry is really criticizing the military in general.
Happy belated birthday Brett and Alex! May this next year be filled with Jesus Christ and His work. I’m glad to know there will be two more Christians voting this year.
November 4th, 2006 at 9:45 pm
Let’s remember that Senator Kerry isn’t the enemy.
He isn’t the first one to botch a joke.
Of note is the fact that the Heritage Foundation did a study and concluded that US military personnel are actually slightly smarter than their peers.
“According to a comprehensive study of all enlistees for the years 1998-99 and 2003 that The Heritage Foundation just released, the typical recruit in the all-volunteer force is wealthier, more educated and more rural than the average 18- to 24-year-old citizen is. Indeed, for every two recruits coming from the poorest neighborhoods, there are three recruits coming from the richest neighborhoods.”

November 5th, 2006 at 7:08 pm
Isaac,
We know Kerry might not “technically” be the enemy (though, we could contend that he -and the left- is part (of) our enemy). We know that he isn’t the first to botch a joke.
Though, I think his “botched joke” was just a cover for his anti-military comment. He saw it backfire and had to cover. Kinda like in 2004 when he stepped out of an SUV, and got asked about it and responded “It’s my family’s car”.
His actions and words don’t line up so he has to cover himself with something, in this case I believe it was the “botched joke” line.
Either way, he was wrong. There are very smart people in the military (or going into it).
November 6th, 2006 at 12:11 am
I’m very interested in your response to those who says Kerry deserves some respect. Do you plan on replying any time soon?
Happy belated birthday.
November 6th, 2006 at 5:39 am
My contention is that we hold a double-standard. Too often, when a right-winger makes a mistake, we rush to cover them…but when a left-winger does the same, its front-page news on our blogs.
How many here are familiar with the fact that Secretary Rice said this: “As I was telling my husb— As I was telling President Bush”? I prefer to give her the benefit of the doubt there. I’m trying to do the same for Senator Kerry. We are Christians before we are Republicans/Conservatives/whatever we are.
November 6th, 2006 at 6:00 am
Isaac,
I think we all tend to fall into that trap at one point or another. I’d like to note that we don’t always cover our own. Look at Delay, Karen Harris in Florida, Reed in Georgia, or Mark Foley. We’re not all covering for that, a few individuals will, but the Republican as a party has pretty much abandoned them.
What is so funny about Kerry is that whenever he says what he really means, his foot winds up in his mouth.
Yes double stndards exist, they always will. However when you have a track record like Mr. Kerry, the botched joke line becomes questionable.
My pennies,
KP
November 6th, 2006 at 6:03 am
Yes, the Republicans did abandon those people…after it was *proven.* (I remember a girl who still like Tom Delay in spite of the scandal… O:-) ) When unproven though, we tend to give them the benefit of the doubt.
November 6th, 2006 at 11:32 am
Isaac,
Recall 2004 please, the guy has a track record of saying things and then covering up when it backfires. What I’m saying is, it’s John Kerry’s character to do this.
As far as the republican abandonment after it being “proven”. In different cases, it wasn’t proven it was fabricted. That however is pretty off topic…if you want the details on that, contact me.
(strange, I know that girl *grin*)
November 9th, 2006 at 9:20 pm
I hope you both had a truly blessed birthday, and many prayers for another even more fruitful year of Christ’s work by both of you!
Really great cartoon there, Brett! I do agree that we need lots more of our political cartooners to have your approach (rather than all favoring the liberals, as they seem to be)…
You should do more!
In response to the few who’ve mentioned that John Kerry has been “placed over us by God”, I have to respectfully say that I don’t think this is true. God doesn’t directly appoint our leaders…he gave us the gift of FREE WILL, and in this country of America, we have the ability to use it in a huge way by electing our leaders. And unfortunately, while many of us here (I hope!) pray for God’s will to be done on election day, the majority of voters probably vote without that in mind at all. In other words, God doesn’t control the results of our elections as if we were puppets (although it would be wonderful if He did sometimes, don’t you think?). In light of this, I believe that a candidate such as Kerry is really NOT a truly God-given leader. In fact, I think it’s possible that some of our most corrupt “leaders” are permitted by God as a kind of chastisement. That is not to say that Christ cannot still work through and despite corrupted politics…He’s an expert at taking what would appear to be a mess and making some good come out of it.
All Praise be to Him for his ever-far-reaching mercy to us!
Hope this helps.
Joyfully in Christ,
Claire

I think you missed the point of what kerry was saying: a certain population of youth are put at risk by being sent to war- the majroity are those without financial support and college education. My question is, with all of your topics that I’ve been scanning for two days; why haven’t I seen anything to do with the Iraq war? Isn’t that relevant to youth culture? Furthermore, does a biblical interpretation justify all this warmongering resulting in the slaughter of both Iraquis (civilians and soldiers) and American soldiers (note not civilians)?
As Bob Dylan says in “Masters of War” to “You that build the big guns
You that build the death planes
You that build all the bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks”- the engineers of brutal war- “Not even Jesus would forgive what you do”.
This war- nor those who engineer it- can be described as Godly, and I ask, why- Harris Duo- haven’t you addressed this problem? And more to the point, I respectfully challenge you to consider how responsible is it to take a fragment of a speech and distort its point, to make that the focus of your attention when an unGodly war is being waged? And that man was the only viable option for stopping it?
January 16th, 2008 at 8:33 pm
wow that is not funny at all
August 4th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
The cartoon is really funny I admit, but Kerry really chose poor words. couple of guys actually fighting in Iraq and I think that anyone who would take a shot at them is not it for office.
August 4th, 2008 at 4:38 pm
The Soldiers respons was funny too.
August 4th, 2008 at 4:46 pm
yeah john kerry is a retard he tried running for president to rule the people that live america while insulting there sons, brothers, husbands and wives that fight for freedom but of couse theyr to dumb to gat an education ya that would be fmart ……..retard
