Update: Modesty Survey - Week One
Since being launched last Tuesday, The Modesty Survey has captured over 70,000 answers from around 730 Christians guys, ages 12-50+. Roughly half (55.5%) the respondents have been teenagers (ages 13-19), 32.6% fall between the ages of 20-29, and 10.7% are 30 years old or older.
Most importantly, over 95% of current respondents (1) notice whether a girl dresses modestly or not, (2) agree (or strongly agree) that modesty is important for all girls, regardless of height, weight or build, and (3) say that modesty is an important quality for their future wives to have.
The survey will remain open until 1,000 Christian guys have completed it. At the current rate we should reach that number by next Tuesday, but we’ll need your help. Below are a few ways you can help speed up the release of the final results.
ACTION STEPS for WEEK TWO
GUYS: If you haven’t done so yet, sign-up for the survey and encourage your godly friends to take it too. If you’ve already started the survey, finish the survey. Don’t procrastinate or it may close before you share your opinion on important issues.
GIRLS: Keep recruiting more godly Christian guys to take the survey. If you’ve run out of guys to tell, make sure the guys you’ve already told have completed the survey. The sooner 1,000 guys have completed the entire survey, the sooner the results will be released.

Getting closer!!!
I’m really looking forward to the final results!! Thanks to all of you who have worked on this survey. Guys: Thank you to those who have taken the survey or will be taking the survey. As a sister in Christ, I appreciate it very much.

Will the survey be “completely” closed after the 1000th respondant? If there are more out there who want to contribute after that time, will there be anything they can do?
Also, on a side note, I just came across news about the new trend in Australian beach wear - the “burqini”, for the modest Muslima woman. Our Christian girls are struggling over whether to cover up their one-piece bathing suits in public because they might look “funny” or have trouble swimming, and yet these Muslim girls have found a way to go swimming while covered from head covering to feet! (And this in a country where it is not uncommon at all to find nude or topless beaches everywhere) I’m sorry if this is offensive to anyone, given that Islam is such a far take-off from the true worship of Jehovah God. But, my goodness, there must be some lesson we can learn from this.

Wow, how awesome! Thank you so much all the guys who are doing this. I can’t wait to see the results.

Thanks for the update!
“Most importantly, over 95% of current respondents… agree (or strongly agree) that modesty is important for all girls, regardless of height, weight or build”
Thanks for posting that! As a girl it’s easy to justify not dressing modestly by thinking, it’s only important for the “prettier” girls.

Awesome! I am SO excited!
January 16th, 2007 at 6:33 pm
Wow! It’s so awesome that you guys have put on this modesty survey. I’m looking forward to the end results.
Thanks for the update!

Thanks for posting this survey, guys. I haven’t really been to your site much, but I was referred by a friend to this survey.
I like how it made me think about what I truly thought about these different things, and I hope it will educate some young ladies and encourage others in their walk with the Lord.
God Bless,

I agree with Becky. I often think modesty is more important for girls that have more to be modest about, figuratively speaking (excuse the wretched pun). Too bad guys think differently. It’s good to know things like that, though. Thanks for doing this (both people who put the survey together and guys who took it).

Lisa M,
We currently swim in “Skirted Swimmers” from http://www.wholesomewear.com. Not sure if they’d be functional for extremely active swimmers, but if I can’t find a way to be modest about an activity, then I think it should not be done where others can see me! Yeah, you’ll look different, but I’d rather! : p
Just in case you were looking for ideas. : )

Thanks for the update! How encouraging!

What a great idea!
Thanks to the rebelution team who put it together and to all the guys who participate in it… I have often wondered what guys thoughts were on many of those questions.. can’t wait to see the results!
January 17th, 2007 at 4:35 am
Wow, that is so fantastic! It’s really helpful to know what our brothers in the Lord think.
God bless!
January 17th, 2007 at 8:55 am
It’s wonderful to hear about all the participation! Thanks guys!

It’ll be really cool to look at the finished project! I’ve just recently started checking out your website and it’s really cool. this is an amazing idea. God bless!
January 17th, 2007 at 2:12 pm
This is such a wonderful thing that you guys are doing! Great job!
Just a word for gals looking for modest swimwear… just recently, I have come across “board shorts”! They were made for girls that participate in activites such as surfing, wake boarding or water skiing, or as I say, anything in water. Just thought I’d share my info:D
God Bless

I think it must really be a sacrifice to go through all the info from the survey. We really appreciate your efforts!
I am curious to know if any of you have read “Secret Keeper” by Dannah Gresh. It is truly a revolutionary modesty book. This little book taught me what goes on in guys heads: that their minds are visually oriented in ways girls wouldn’t have imagined. It really goes into the heart attitude of girls too. WHY are girls attracted to edgy clothing? Because it gives us a sense of power to know we look attractive (or sexy).
Finally, it includes some simple and clever modesty tests that are an easy way to decide on clothes! (I have most trouble with the ‘raise and praise’ test — its soo hard to find long shirts and high pants!) Appropriate for all ages.
Thank you again.
January 17th, 2007 at 3:44 pm
Note –
Dannah Gresh goes on to tell us that REAL power is not in looking provocative, but in hiding out body and letting our inner beauty shine out. It ignites curiosity in others as to who we really are, not just what the rest of our body is like.

Thank you guys sooo much for this. It is a struggle for me top dress modestly. In my church the young men are all in anonymous agreement that girls dress provacative for them and they have right to lust and look! I pray that God will have mercy. But, yes, this survey has reafirmed my conviction to dress modestly.
Also responding to PhoebeJoy’s post, Dannah Gresh hits the nail right on the head. Her book is an awesome read for any- male or female.

It is truly a blessing to be able to see all of this happening, to be a part of it through prayer and to be able to learn from it. I thank God that he has given me this source of guidance not only on the Modesty matter but every other subject all of you have addressed. I would like to thank all of the Rebelutionaries around the world for you encouragement and inspiration it has motivated me to live for and rely on God, and I was afraid to do that before.. So again thank you
January 18th, 2007 at 2:23 pm
Hey! I think that is so so awesome that you all r doing this! thank u so much! :>) i just heard about your website, and it rocks! “modest is ALWAYS hottest!” thanks again for showing girls how that we should not cause our brothers to stumble in any way..and i think that girls should respect guys in that way by not dressing immodestly. thanks,
God bless you!

Just a thought on swimsuits. board shorts, or bathingsuits w/ shorts are better than ones w/ skirts if you’re going to be swiming in it. (especialy when rideing wave @ the beach.) I know cause I like the ones w/ skirts better for looks, but I’ve tried surfing in them. And wearing a long tank top under a takini makes it a lot more modest. Thank you so much for this, i can’t wait to see the results.

Thanks for posting the answer about: “over 95% of current respondents agree (or strongly agree) that modesty is important for all girls, regardless of height, weight or build”. I have always wondered if the weight, height, etc was as important for girls who are petite (like me). It was very helpful!
Keep up the great work, guys!

Sean just posted an ad on our blog for ya! Trying to get more guys to answer it. We will also be sending out an email to folks we know.

Hey guys,
This isn’t related to this post, but it is VERY IMPORTANT! There is an urgent situation in the entertainment industry right now that needs to be talked about, prayed for, and acted upon.
You can read about it at my blog. This is the article: http://kingdomadvancing.blogspot.com/2007/01/wrong-in-so-many-ways.html
I really would be obliged if you would create a short post linking to the article, or writing about the topic yourself. You have such a large readership and blogroll that I am not able to reach even close to all the people. I hope you will help. This is not about sponsoring my blog or popularizing it: it’s about a young girl (actress Dakota Fanning) who needs protection and prayers from those responsible to do so, and this is about standing up for what’s right.
Thanks,
Kingdom Advancer

Oh my goodness, I can’t even tell you how comforting it is to come here and read updates about all the Christian guys who really care about girls and their modesty. As I’ve said in some of my other comments, I go to a public school. Not more than an hour ago, we finished putting on the school play. It is so horrible to see guys nonchalanly walk into the girls dressing room WHILE girls are changing. They don’t even knock. I don’t know which is worse, the fact that the guys come in or the fact that the girls don’t do anything about it! They didn’t see me, but the total disregard they show for the girls is horrible (and I went to a private school for the first 10 years of my life, so it’s especially hard to get used to). I can’t thank you enough for caring about us enough to do this survey.
January 19th, 2007 at 7:42 pm
Kingdom Advancer;
Thank you for telling us about this problem, I have posted a link on my site and told family and friends.
Anyone who has not yet read what Kingdom Advancer posted I would advise that you read it now. This is a huge problem and needs lots of prayers. Read the post and share it with those you know and get them praying.

Dear Alex and Brett,
My name is Rebekah and I am 18 years old. I live in Hawaii on the island of Kauai. I have really been encouraged by your blog and the determination that you have to futher Christ’s kingdom and be an encouragement to other christian youth. Thank you so much for doing this modesty survey, it will be eye-opening for sure as this has always been a subject of contemplation for me. I did have one question and perhaps you might also ask your sisters for input. As a christian young woman seeking to be modest, and I know others with this same question, Do you have any suggestion as to where we can find and buy good quality, sophisticated modest clothing? Thanks again for all that you are doing for us.
Mahalo Nui Loa (Thank you very much),

Rebekah,
My family usually gets clothes from Land’s End or L. L. Bean. They’re generally modest (depends a little on the strictness of your standards), and last very well.

I would also recommend Old Navy, Gap, Banana Republic, New York & Company, American Eagle, etc. Though not all clothes at these stores are modest, they do sell some modest yet also modern and stylish items that can be found with a little digging.

Thank you to all the guys that participated! I can’t wait to see the results.

This is an amazing thing that guys can do to make girls more aware of what is modest or immodest. Thankyou to all the guys who took part in the survey. It will be very interesting to see the results. Thankyou to Brett and Alex for helping all christian teens take a stand for what we believe in and for encouraging us with our christian walk by showing us how many other teens are supporting you guys in this. Thankyou!
