Turning Twenty: October 28, 2008

Birthdays are funny things. You don’t feel older. You don’t look older. But suddenly, you are older. It always used to confuse us when we were little, how for 364 days in a row we were the same age, then, in a single day, we would age an entire year.

Turning twenty has to be the oddest birthday of all. For 2,554 days in a row you’re a teenager. Then, suddenly, you’re not. For Alex and I this odd transition will take place tomorrow. As the older twin, Alex will turn twenty 20-minutes before me.

But what does this mean for the Rebelution? In our last blog post as teens, we want to remind you of a few important truths, as well as share some exciting ideas we have for the future of the Rebelution and the role we’ll play in that.

The Rebelution Movement = YOU

The Rebelution is not about Alex and Brett. If you’ve been to a conference and made your way to the front to say “hi,” you’ve probably heard us tell someone, “You are the movement.” We say it because it’s true. If we were to disappear, walk away, or even cease to be teenagers — the Rebelution would continue. This movement is you, choosing daily to do hard things by God’s grace and for His glory.

Do Hard Things. Doesn’t Stop.

We don’t expect to wake up tomorrow morning and discover that we suddenly don’t need to exert ourselves, step outside our comfort zones, or fight for holiness. The need to do hard things doesn’t stop when you turn twenty. Low expectations don’t stop when you turn twenty. This is a lifetime battle — and we’re just starting.

Looking back on the last seven years — especially the last three — we don’t regret any decision we made to trust God and obey Him, no matter how hard or painful the process was. That gives us tremendous confidence. As we continue to do hard things, He will be faithful to provide the grace we need to see it through.

The reason we challenge ourselves as teens is to prepare ourselves for a lifetime of doing hard things for the glory of God. What Alex and I have learned by doing hard things as teens — if only that God is faithful when we obey Him — will serve us in whatever God has for us in the future. And speaking of the future…

Future Plans and New Events

I remember talking with one person who was very concerned that Alex and I would “pack up our bags and leave” as soon as we turned twenty. Allow us to squash that concern: We’re not going anywhere. In fact, God seems to be leading us to dream even bigger dreams. We want to share some of those dreams with you.

Up till now, our focus has been primarily on education, spreading the ideas behind the Rebelution through the blog, conferences, and book. All of that will continue each year. But that’s only the first step. The second step is to engage rebelutionaries — coming alongside them as they pursue their holy ambitions. That’s our passion.

Moving forward, Alex and I see our role being that of facilitators. We want to provide a platform for other rebelutionaries and connect them with the resources, mentors, and opportunities they need to make their visions come alive. We’re already working on a new event — slated for 2011 — that will bring together all of those pieces.

So yes, we’re turning twenty. But this is not the end. It’s only the beginning.

Now… Bring Me That Horizon.

Happy Birthday Alex and Brett! God has accomplished so much in your lives as teenagers, and you are so right that God will continue to lead you on to greater adventures. Thank you for letting God work though you. Thank you for inspiring thousands of teenagers to Do Hard Things. And most of all, thank you for encouraging me to revel in the gospel and draw closer to Jesus. I’m excited to find out what you guys planning, and let us know when you can about what we can do to help.

    God bless,
    Christina

May the best of happy birthday blessings be yours, Alex & Brett!!!! May the Lord fill this coming year of life with much wisdom and grace for you both. May you be challenged in ways you could have never expected, and find special mercies to meet them with Christian courage. Do Hard Thing, do good things, do grow ever closer to Him. :-)

[[I must confess I think it's quite cool that y'all's birthdays are just a day after mine. I remain a teen, however. :-) ]]

  6. Kristina P. Says:

    Happy Birthday to you
    We admire you two
    but we know that truly
It’s God all the way through

(Have a great day and keep up the good work!)

  9. Becky Lynn Says:

Happy Birthday! :) Congratulations on sticking through with a very hard calling, for glorifying God with your lives, and for sacrificing yourselves for His purposes. I know that as much as you share about the amazing and uplifting things that you have experienced through they years you have given over to God’s control, you have experienced a lot of suffering and heartache. You two are an incredible witness to teens of this generation and the ones to come. I’m excited to see where God leads you next!

Oh - and this summer/fall I made a couple “hard” choices of my own, and it was to your book (after the Bible, of course!) that I fled when my flesh told me to just do the easy thing. Thanks for the (indirect?) suppot! :D

  10. Rachel S. Says:

Happy Birthday! May God continue to bless you both in the years to come and keep shining for Him. I bought your book at the Resolve conference this year, and I started reading and couldn’t put it down. Soon after I was almost done, both me and my brother were going to recite 1Thes. 5 in front of our church, and I was nervous, but after I read the section in your book about not being nervous in speaking in front of people and that God will give us the peace and strength we need, I was not nervous. Praise HIM! God bless.

  11. Chelsey Miracle Says:

Happy Birthday! Thanks you guys for everything you’ve taught us through your example, I look forward to the continuation of this amazing movement and God’s work through and in you guys. Thanks so much!

    Chelsey

  12. Hannah Michelle Says:

This made me smile. :D (I was a little sad about saying goodbye to 19 when it was my turn…) Looking forward to the Rebelution - all of us - growing with you. Happy Birthday!

  13. Constance Jane Says:

A blessed Birthday to both of you.
It’s amazing to know that there are actually guys who are willing to step up for to do hard things for Christ.
May the love of the Lord be with you both always wherever you go and whatever you do.
Continue to walk following the example of Christ in whatever you do so that His Wonderful name may be glorified.
You guys are a great encouragement. Keep up the good work. I believe that “he who began a good work in you will be faithful to complete it..”
More Energy for the Expansion of God’s Kingdom
    Shalom!

  14. Alyssa C. Says:

    Happy Birthday, Alex!

    [20 minutes later]

    Happy Birthday, Brett!

Thanks a lot, guys, for this movement you’ve started. Yes, I believe it’s not the ending but the beginning of many more wonderful things. I’m excited for you and how God continues to work in your lives.

May you have a wonderful and memorable celebration!

    God bless both of you!!!

  15. Louise S Says:

Happy birthday to you both!! I would like to take this opportunity to say that you have been, and most certainly will continue to be, a wonderful witness to the young people of this generation.

When I first saw this website, I felt the heart beat of the movement. I was so excited to know that there are so many people also walking the high road. To know that there is more, and that it costs so much to get that more, yet to daily choose to make that sacrifice is a true representation of a disciple of God. A disciple is a disciplined individual. It’s not enough to be a Jesus follower, you must be a disciplined Jesus seeker. It’s not enough just to know about Him. It’s about having a relationship with the living King of kings!!

Keep charging forward you warriors of the cross!!
    God bless!!

  16. Hannah T. Says:

Happy Happy Birthday to you two!!! I hope that the start of being 20 is a great one! Can’t wait to hear about what God has in store for you both in the future!

Thanks again for letting the Lord use you both to glorify Himself! It’s been amazing to see how much God has used you both to influence this generation! I’ll be praying for you both, as you start into the twenties, that your walk with the Lord will just keep growing stronger!

God Bless and Happy Happy Birthday again!

  17. Meg N. Gupta Says:

I was a little worried about what would happen to the blog once you turned 20, but it seems like your plans for the Rebelution are only getting better and better! I can’t wait to hear more about your 2010 plans and how God will continue to use you.
Still, I’d better hurry and join the Rebelution forums while I’m still a teenager before I turn twenty this January!

  18. Nicole D. Says:

    Happy Birthday!
I think that you make a good point. Just because the Rebelution is a teenage movement does not mean that when you stop being a teen, you will no longer be subject to low expectations. The whole point of the Rebelution is to get us started doing hard things while we are young, and then we will be able to do harder and harder things as we age. Anything, then, becomes possible.

  19. Nella Camille Says:

Have a great birthday, guys! And thanks for the post and encouragement! You guys have been such a great inspiration to so many people, myself included. . . so I’m glad you just won’t be packing up and leaving ;).

    Every blessing,
    ~Camille

  20. Rebecca Says:

Happy Birthday to both of you!
I am glad that you all are willing to still make the rebelution known through yourselves. But yes without all of the other rebelutionaries the rebelution would cease to exist. I havev never been to one of the conferences so I can’t wait for 2010 also like many others! Keep up the good work and maybe I will see you around at Patrick Henry. I am in the high school choir that they are doing this year.
Birthdays are making me think of how fast my teen years are going by. WOW! But we won’t stop when we hit 20! Definatly not!

  21. Catherine Hayes Says:

Happy birthday Alex and Brett (and Skylar)! Now you’ve made me curious. :) That event planned for 2010 must be pretty big if you’re already planning. Have a great day, and happy birthday again!

  22. Sarah Says:

Great post Brett! I knew that you guys wouldn’t go anywhere =)! I hope you and Alex have an awesome birthday. I pray that God will continue to use you and I can’t wait to see what He has planned for 2010!!!! You and Alex are a great inspiration to all of us.
God bless and have a great day! :)

    ~Sarah~

  23. Jessica M. Says:

    -Maria

  30. Anya Says:

    Happy birthday, guys.

Thank you so much for all that you have done in just making this possible, even though I haven’t been making as much use of it now that I’m at college.

    Have a wonderful day. :)

  31. Emily W. Says:

Thank you for reminding us that we are the movement. It is easy to look to you two, as the founders, and feel as if the rebelution could not continue without you.
Nearing the adult years myself, I have huge regrets that I was not aware of the rebelution until later in my teen years and that now, I am not a true rebelutionary because I will only be a teen for a little longer. It is so important that we remember that doing hard things should be a life-long ambition. Thank you, guys for using your teen years to help all of us discover these truths, and continuing in them as you enter adulthood.

  32. Becca Whitpan Says:

Happy Birthday guys! Thanks for the reminder, that even when the teen years stop the battle doesn’t end there! I can’t immagine what would happen if some of the great Rebelutionaries just stopped when they turned twenty. It would be a world of trouble. I’m so glad that you two aren’t going anywhere. =)

    In Christ Alone,
    Rebecca Whitpan

  35. Tabitha Davies Says:

    Happy Birthday, Brett and Alex!

What a great reminder of the purpose of the Rebelution. Doing Hard Things as a teen is just the first step toward a life of Doing Hard Things for God. May God bless you as you continue on this Journey with Him!

Okay, now I’ve always wondered but never had the guts to ask… :-) did your parents realize that they named the first twin with an “A” and the second one with a “B”? (From the time I saw your names in WORLD magazine I wondered if Alex was older because A comes before B in the alphabet!)

  48. Eric Novak Says:

Hmm, I was a day off. XD

    Oh well! Happy birthday guys!

  49. Tara Marie Says:

Happy birthday Alex and Brett! Thank you for all you guys have done and continue to do. It has been such an encouragement and blessing to SO many people! Keep pursuing God’s glory in all that y’all do! :D

“For not one of us lives for himself, and not one dies for himself; for if we live, we live for the Lord, or if we die, we die for the Lord; therefore whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s. For to this end Christ died and lived again, that He might be Lord both of the dead and of the living.” Romans 14:7-9

    Happy birthday guys!
Alex, you get to be twenty while you brother is still nineteen is that the coolest part about being a twin or what! Anyways, thanks for the encouragement. You both have been a encouragement and blessing to many people myself included. I’m glad to hear that you will not be “paking your bags and leaving” though the rebelution would continue. I hope you have a awsome day and a great year! I look forward to hearing more about the 2010 event!
    ~Kindra R.

Hannah Y: I think that their parents had that all figgured out! Doctors usually refer to twins as baby “A” and baby “B” before they are born.

I like quotes. You’ve probably heard all of these since they’re the kind most people share at high school graduations and stuff. ;-) But I think they’re powerful all of the time. :-)

  60. Clarice Gerbl Says:

Happy 20th birthday to both of you!

Before I really figured out what the Rebelution was about (my friends from the Philippines, Alyssa and Hannah C., first introduced me to your website), I found the fact that you were homeschooled and twins really cool- but your faith is what blew my mind sky-high. I was wary at first, wondering how was it even possible that a teenage guy -let alone *two*- actually had a strong faith, a strong DESIRE to serve God with all of his being existed? (Didn’t a guy have to be somewhere in his 20’s to grow up enough to realize he needed God?) But then I realized you guys were for real.

In 1 Timothy 4:12, the Apostle Paul tells Timothy, “Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.”, and through God you have definitely set us all an incredible example by letting God work through you, and TALK through you, encouraging us to shoot forward, to keep going to that goal, to never stop, to do the things that can be hard, because it’s *worth* it no matter what the world says.

(I think you also said something about never using parentheses…)

Congratulations on turning 20- may God bless and guide you throughout your life in the most amazing way.

Thanks, for so much more than I can ever express.
    Your Sister,
    Clarice

    Have a great birthday!

  62. Caleb Nathaniel Says:

Happy birthday you two! Hope you guys have a blessed day.

  63. Elise Says:

Happy Birthday Alex and Brett!! :-D

Haha, it’s something I used to think about sometimes and have a chuckle over, “What are they going to do when they turn TWENTY and are no longer teenagers?!”

I love the sound of what you guys want to do in the coming years! I can’t wait to find out what the 2010 event is - it sounds great!

  64. Elizabeth Joy Says:

Sounds like you are almost the exact same age as my brother, Ben. He turned 20 on the 25th.

Hope God continues to give you both a vision for the future. The “rebelution” concept (like you’ve pointed out before) has been around since the beginning of time, thanks for helping reawaken it. I hope God will continue to reveal his plan for young people around the globe.

    ~Elizabeth

  65. Johanna H. Says:

Happy 20th Birthday to Both of You!!!

WOW!! I can not believe that your 20 years old!!!
    I will be 20 in 1,094 days.
The rebelution has changed my ideas about the teen years completely.
I hope that the Rebelution will not change much with you not being teens.
But as you said “So yes, we’re turning twenty. But this is not the end. It’s only the beginning.”
I do hope that this is only the beginning and that the end will not be soon.

    Again Happy Birthday!!!!

    Johanna H.

  66. Anabel Cuevas Says:

  67. Sarah Pena Says:

Happy Birthday! Happy Birthday! Happy Birthday!

I have a question Brett. You said that someone was afraid that you were going to “Pack up your bags and leave”. Do you mean that you guys are not going to leave home? After you’re done with college I mean. I hope that is what you meant. I intend to stay home with my parents till my “Mr. Right” comes along, even if I am fifty when he comes! :) Not that I am even close to that :). Anyway, have a wonderful birthday guys and may God richly bless you always. Continue to serve the Lord!

    Sarah. :)

  68. Gaby Says:

    Happy Birthday Alex and Brett!

  69. RBMA Says:

Happy B-day to both of you!

Nice Pirates of the Carribean quote at the end.. :P

  70. Alice N. Says:

Happy birthday!!! I’m glad the Rebelution isn’t ending…I only found out about it five months ago! Thanks for being such a huge influence and an inspiring example. I would be without SO many blessings (volunteering in childcare being one of my favorites) if it weren’t for the Rebelution (I was afraid of working with kids before I went to the Rebelution conference. After I decided to step out of my comfort zone, I discovered that I LOVE kids!!!)
    God bless!

  71. Kelsa Hope Says:

Happy 20th Birthday, Alex and Brett! May God richly bless you, filling you with His spirit. Thank you so much for starting The Rebelution. God has touched all of our lives through you and your faithful ministry.
    Kelsa Hope

  72. Caitlin Y. Says:

Happy B-day Alex and Brett! Thank-you so much for your commitment and love for Christ. It has been so encouraging for me personally, and I’m pretty sure I can speak for the rest as well. You have made God look even more glorious to me, through your ministries. That is something priceless. May the next year bring even more blessing and growth to you both, Lord willing.
    Caitlin : )

  73. Trey Edwards Says:

Soli Deo Gloria, guys! You guys are an inspiration to young adults all around the world, keep it up! I’m glad you guys stress the importance of the Rebelution not being only for “teens.” Men and women of all age groups need to hear your rallying cry, if too old to act on it, then to encourage others to do so.
    SOLI DEO GLORIA!
    (and happy birthday, y’all!)

  74. Olivia N. Says:

    Congratulations, guys! That’s a milestone…Happy Birthday!

May the Lord continue to grant you wisdom, clearly lead you in paths of righteousness, and into all truth. Thanks for your example and all you do. Keep up the great work!

My twentieth is in 125 days. :) “Every day is a gift…”

    Soli Deo Gloria!
    Courtney

  78. Adrienne Gilbert Says:

What’s really bad is that I knew your b-day was the 28th, but when I read this post, I thought, “Are they a week ahead or what?” Heh, guess that’s me, a week behind! :P

So Happy Birthday! Yes, turning 20 is great! You won’t have any problem…because 20 is what the Rebelution has been preaching for years that should be how teens are viewed. You’re basically as young as you were yesterday, but now people EXPECT more, because you’re not a teen, you’re a mature adult. Here’s the problem…no more of that “WOW! You’re so young! I can’t believe all the stuff you’re doing!” Bascially, turning 20 turns off the “mediocre excellence” trap, which is a good thing. But it can be a little bit surprising. When you’ve been used to dealing with all those compliments, all of a sudden people aren’t commenting any more. They’re just expecting it.

So now you’re true Rebelutionaries…able to show the younger folk how to do hard things without the praising and fluff. Welcome to the “old” club! :D

    Blessings, Peace, Prayers,
    Adrienne

  79. Andre Says:

    Whoohoo! Happy Birthday!!

  83. Becca Says:

Happy Birthday Guys! God’s grace has been so VERY evident in both of your lives! May God grant you more grace in the years to come! Thank you for being an example to so many other teenagers all over the world (including me!!!!!).

  84. Rachel Says:

First of all, a hearty happy birthday to both of you!

Second, I think we tend to idolize our leaders. We think, “I could never be like them.” But, if we continue to think that way, soon all our good leaders will be gone. [Disclaimer: we can never be like those godly leaders on our own, but with God’s grace we can.] We need to be training to take their place. In other words, I completely agree with you. You need to be training us to be the next leaders of the rebelution and beyond.

  85. Daniel Osborne Says:

Happy birthday! I am looking forward to seeing how all of those [excellent] plans play out. :D

  86. Kierstyn Says:

Awesome guys, I can’t wait to see where God leads you. Happy Birthday! :D

  89. Claire Rossell Says:

    -Kole

  91. Elizabeth Says:

Hope you had a great day! :D

  92. Kristin Carr Says:

    Happy Birthday, Guys! :-D

MAY GOD BLESS BOTH OF YOU!!!

  93. Hannah Says:

I almost didn’t post for two reasons… telling you two happy birthday would simply be redundant, and the number of guy’s posts are already severely outnumbered by the number of girl’s posts… and for some reason things like that have always bugged me. But obviously, I’m posting anyway. Happy Birthday, and thanks for leaving us hanging on that tantalizing bit of information about the whatever you’re planning.

I really think that the Rebelution is relevant to young adults as well as teens. Actually, if you thinkabout it, those terms should be synonomous. I’m glad you’re not going to step away from your ministry just because of your age… simply put, I would consider that ridiculous.;)

  94. Sydney Says:

    Happy Birthday Alex and Brett!!!

God has done some amazing things through the two of you and I can’t wait to see what else He has in store for you two. God bless you as you start your 20s off today.

    Shalom! :-)

So, how is it being 20? What does it feel like to “Cross over” ?? :D :D :D Glad you guys aren’t going anywhere. :)

    Blessings!
    Julia

  111. Grace Says:

To echo everyone else, happy birthday to you two! 20, wow, you guys sure are getting old. :-D Oh, and Hannah, I think girls are just more into saying happy birthday than guys are. Girls like wrapping presents and picking out cards, and guys…..well, don’t. :-D

  112. Justine Says:

though i’d add more birthday wishes to the 100-some ones already here! praying that God continues to strengthen you to do His work during your 20’s! Happy birthday!

You are an encouragement to me! Well I hope you both have had a great Birthday, and KEEP SERVING CHRIST!!!!:)

  116. Jayan Nair Says:

    Alex and Brett,

I don’t think you need to hear “Happy Birthay” again for the umteenth time :) , but I would like to thank you for your vision and leadership in this movement. You may not be the movement, but I’m not sure it would have started without you guys! Thanks a bunch!

Frater tui in Christe (Your brother in Christ),
    Jayan

    P.S. I’d like to echo Talitha’s request for some photo’s :)

  117. Iris Says:

  120. Hannah Peck Says:

Happy Birthday guys! (A couple days late :) )
I’ve only been a part of the Rebelution for a couple of months, but it’s been life changing. The Rebelution cause and message has become very important to me and is very close to my heart now. Thanks for sticking around. I can’t wait to see what’s next!
    God bless!
    Hannah

  121. Elisabeth Gruber Says:

Happy Be-Lated Birthday!!! Day 2 of 365 as twenty-year olds!

  122. Abigail V. Says:

Anything Talitha posts, I echo! She’s a few months younger than me, but so influential. Please post pictures! That would be really cool. I know I already said this, but Happy Birthday, Alex and Brett!

  123. Naomi Says:

Hey Brett, just wondering- does Alex ever happen to tease you about being 20 min. older? ;)

  124. Grace Says:

Happy 20th you two! Feeling old yet? ;) - I’d love to see some pictures!!!

  125. Lauren Ashley Says:

You guys have been a great encouragement to me and my family! It’s good to hear that you will be keeping up your ministry through the Rebelution website and future horizons. May God bless you in the coming year,

    Lauren Ashley

  126. Lindsey Says:

Phew, I was wondering what was going to happen after y’all were no longer teenagers. It’s so cool to see how much The Rebelution has grown in just the two short years I’ve known about it. Keep up the good work!

  127. Michelle Says:

happy birthday (late) alex and brett! :) thanks for all you do with the Rebelution - it has been a big blessing to me and to a lot of my friends too. hope your year is awesome.

  128. Danique Says:

    Happy Belated Birthday guys!

  129. Elizabeth Kelley Says:

Confound it, I’m 2 whole days late. :’( Well, not to sound like I’m from “Alice in Wonderland,” but Happy Un-birthday!
“Now…bring me that horizon.” I think that’s probably the only time I’ll ever see y’all quote Jack Sparrow in regards to the Rebelution.
Thanks, by the way, for not “dropping” the movement!

  130. Noella Says:

Thank you so much guys, for the words of encouragement, and for reminding us that the Rebelution revolves around Jesus.

As you begin another year with God and each other, may His love uphold you, His strength fill you, and His peace overflow from your hearts. And remember that wherever He leads you, He’s only a prayer away.

    Thanks for standing strong!!

    Till He returns,

    Noella

  131. Hannah/Rocky Says:

As my friend said, “confound it, I’m 2 days late.” Happy Birthday, you two! “…’Fear not, peace be with you; be strong and of good courage.’ ” (Daniel 10:19) May God reveal Himself more and more throughout this year and in years to come.

    Blessed not Lucky,
    Hannah/Rocky

  132. Eliza Says:

Before I turned thirteen (5 years ago), I dreaded my birthday. I was SO not looking forward to being a teenager, with the whole stereotype of rebelliousness and other low expectations. I found your blog about a year ago. Thanks for showing me that “teenager” is not a dirty word!
Blessings on your post-teenager year ministry… I look forward to seeing what comes next!
    ~*~eliza

  133. Rebeka Fry Says:

Happy Birthday!! At first when you said “what does this mean for the Rebelution,” I thought that you were going to quit the website!!! God forbid… forever!!! God is going to work through you guys mightily and bless you two beyond your wildest dreams!!!

    Beka

  134. Grace Says:

I think that everyone who posts should agree with Talitha’s great idea about pictures! We should start up a general clamor for them, then they’ll *have* to post some. Everyone, start chanting with me! Pictures, pictures, pictures! :-D

  135. Aimee Says:

Happy (late) Birthday to you both!
I can’t begin to say how thankful I am for what God has started through you both. After hearing about the Rebelution through Battlecry, and reading Do Hard Things a few months ago… I guess I realized that there is a much higher calling, and it is possible to fulfill it. And most importantly, I realized that I’m not the only one who wants to do big things.
    May God bless you both!

    In Him,
    Aimee

  136. Katelyn Says:

Happy Be-lated birthday, guys! Thank you so much for all you do in bringing about a change in our (backwards) generation.

  137. Stephanie Says:

Ok, not like this is terribly eloquent, but “AMEN to all of what you guys just said!” :) God bless.

  138. Heather T. Says:

Ok, I’m commenting too. Not just to say happy birthday for the billionth time but to say that my little brother shares the same birthday as you two! My brother Anthony turned 10 this year on October 28th. So he is exactly ten years younger than you all. Thanks for being willing to step out and bring forces of people together in this movement. As Anthony, and my other brothers, grow up, you two are the kind of young men I would like them to watch and emulate. I know you’re not perfect or anything, but young boys need Christian men to look up to. And I really appreciate you two for my whole family, but especially my brothers.
    In Christ,
    ~Heather

  139. Rikki Says:

Wow I am LATE at saying this but happy birthday to the two of you!
You guys have really made me re-think about where I should stand in my faith - before I thought that teenagers shouldn’t have to worry about such high expectations but now I KNOW that we should do our best to surpass those expectations and to make newer, harder ones!
God has blessed my life so much through your messages, and I’ll be praying for both of you as you continue to carry out the Lord’s Wonderful plan!
In the Awesome and Glorious Name of Christ,
    Rikki

  140. Brianna Says:

Happy Birthday you Alex and Brett! Thanks for all you’ve done to encourage people of all ages toward holiness…keep it up!
    You guys rock! :-)

  141. Coop Says:

Happy birthday to you both! I can tell you as a 26-year-old that as far as milestone birthdays go, you’re pretty much done. About the only one you’ve got left is 21, when you can actually rent cars, and 25, at which age you no longer have to pay extra for car rentals. :-)

  142. Julia Says:

I am doing a research essay on ethical issues. I thought it might be a good idea to use the rebelution ideas from your book to tell others about the movement. What ethical issues would you consider that you focus on the most?

  143. Daniel Hayes Says:

I am late. Sorry. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! anyway!

P.S. What’s the big event planned for 2010?

P.P.S. Your birthday is three days after my birthday. Very cool.

  144. Stephen G. Says:

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

  145. Drew Says:

Happy birthday guys! sorry this is late. I hope you had a great one. You guys deserve it. It just blows my mind when I see what God is doing through you. I’m proud to say that I am a Rebelutionary!

  146. Lyanne Jordan Says:

Happy 20th Birthday Brett and Alex! Sorry I’m a little late. I just wanted to say how much you guys have changed my life. I’m so grateful to God for giving you two this vision. I pray that one day you may truly see just how you’ve impacted those who’ve read your blog, been to your conference, or read your book. May God truly bless you endeavors and the next phase of your life. Once again, thank you so much for all the wonderful words of wisdom and encouragement. Can’t wait to see what comes out in 2010!!
    God bless
    Lyanne

  147. Mary Anna Salo Says:

I decided that I would add yet another “happy birhtday” to the list.
Ironically, I was just wondering when your birhtday was. My (and my twin’s too :)) birthday is also in October. I’m on my twenty-first day of being twenty. Have fun and God bless!
    P.S.
I can’t wait to hear about the 2010 event!

  148. Kylie Smith Says:

Happy Belated Birthday guys! May you find Jesus near every day of the year!

Oh and by the way, I saw you guys at church this morning! When I was greeting, you guys walked in the door and I watched you suprise Emma Grace and Joshua Quinn. :D

  149. Joshua Guthrie Says:

Well, here’s yet another Happy Birthday to the two of you! I am glad that you are both planning on being there for the Rebolution even though you won’t be teenagers any more!

There is a specific something that you said that I am particularly interested in: “We want to provide a platform for other rebelutionaries and connect them with the resources, mentors, and opportunities they need to make their visions come alive.”

I don’t know if the two of you read your blog comments, but I will let you know this: I am a fellow rebelutionary that has started a non-profit organization for fresh water wells in Sudan Africa, and I would love to take the two of you up on your word for being a platform for people such as me. I will send you a message as well (I already have, but I will try again). I really really hope that you can help me out in my ministry! : )

I thank you guys for stepping forward and being such leaders in the mediocre teenage world out there. May the Lord bless your work, and I hope to be able to meet you some day! (Like at that 2010 thing!)

  150. iaiah pellot Says:

happy birthday and i just finished the book and i loved it ,it turned my life around

  151. Chantel Says:

Cool! Happy birthday! I like how you ended the blog like Pirates of the Caribbean!
    God bless!

  152. Catherine Says:

You are so right; The Rebelution is us. I often tend to think of it as an abstract “cause” I support or as your ministry. But it is me and my friends and all the young Christians across the world who are choosing to know longer conform to this world but be transformed by the renewing of our mind and the sacrifice of our bodies. I’m glad to know you guys are not leaving us behind though because you’re no longer teens. Rebelutionaries are rebelutionaries forever. Thanks for staying.
Question: You guys aren’t gonna STOP blogging are you? Chantel commented yesterday like you were and I really hope that’s not the case. I understand the ministry might look different (it’s already changed so much in the two years) but the blog is probably the biggest blessing I’ve received from The Rebelution. Please keep it up!

  153. Anastasia Hale Says:

Happy late B-day to both of you! My B-day was on October 30th, and I don’t really feel older at all. You exictly right. October is very busy month for my family, because all three kids have B-days. It’s crazy.
    Thank you for sharing.

  154. Ellen F. Says:

Totally off subject, but… Would you guys consider giving us a few wise words, as the Presidential election is in two days?? Maybe a little something about the importance to vote, choosing the right candidate to lead our nation, what we can do as rebelutionaries to help in the election process, etc.?

    Thanks! :)

  155. Amanda Howell Says:

I echo Ellen F. It’d be interesting to know how teenagers/young people should be involved in the political arena. Having the ability to vote for the first time is a little scary, but I’m still interested in what our role is supposed to be in this area.
    A sister in Christ…

  156. Angela Says:

Yikes!! Verrryyy LATE at saying this…but…HAPPY BIRTHDAY YOU TWO!!! Thanks so much for starting the whole rebelution thing and i’m SOO glad to hear that you’re not goin anywhere!!!=)=)=)=) Thanks you guys!!!
    ~Ang

  157. Beth Says:

It’s a little late but, happy birthday to you both! :) And may God bless you guys in your daily walk with Him.

    In Christ,
    Beth

  158. Anna H. Says:

Very LATE happy B-day!! God bless you both and good luck on the election support thing!!! I am praying for you both in all ways. Your Sis in Christ Anna P.S Okay curiosity has killed the cat… Alex are you feeling better now health wise or should I still pray for you in that regard. Best wishes Anna H.

  159. Lexi Says:

(Sorry this is so late but) Happy Birthday you guys!!!! Thank you so much for everything you have done, you guys have impacted my life in so many ways, and i am so thankful for that. The Rebelution (I love that word!!! :)) has gotten me SO fired up to let God work through my life. So many ‘teenagers’ are using their ‘teen years’ to satisfy themselves in one way or another, but we have a much higher calling than that, i’m so glad that you have seen that and are doing something about it. i’m the oldest of four and as far as friends or examples go, i don’t really have anyone to ‘look up to’, in other words; i’m the ‘guinea pig’ in a way (kinda like you guys:)) For both; being a rebelutionary and for ‘kissing dating goodbye’, thank you so much for speaking truth to this lost world and for encouraging others to do the same. Also, thank you for being so willing to obey God’s calling with your lives. I can’t thank you enough;)…Thank you SOOO much and Happy Birthday!!!!
P.S. Thanks for sticking with us too…even though you’re getting ‘up there’ ;)

  160. Erinn Says:

I just heard about your book for the first time thanks to my best friend…I can’t wait to start reading it! I’m in college, and one of my professors has the exact opposite mindset of you guys…she is dead set on teenagers (and college kids alike) only doing the bare minimum required to skate through life. Wrong!
I needed some more weapons in my “Stand Against the World” arsenal, and you, through God’s enabling, have provided that. Thank you!

  161. Hayley Drew Says:

    HAPPY (…unfortunately very late…) BIRTHDAY GUYS!!! :)

Alex and Brett, you guys have been so inspiring to me. A new passion for God and the life He wants for me has been ignited in my heart in the last year after reading your book. It’s exciting to watch what God is doing through you - cant wait to see what He does next!

God bless & Happy 20th birthday!!

  162. Mayra Says:

Well, Congrats! Happy Belated B-Day! May the Lord continue to strengthen the both of you and continue using you guys in a mighty way! October 28 is surely a very very special day!!! (It is my birthday too:) !!!!! ). I just turned 21, trust me I know how you feel! I don’t look older (I think & hope) yet I am. This year is a big year, I joined the Christian Club at school (might I randomly say: AWESOME!). I received my license that no longer says under 21! I will be graduating college in May! Blessing after blessing. God indeed is good!!!!!

  163. Ben Cawford Says:

    Happy 20th!
Bless you 2 for doing this all for us, and keep us people updated for that new conference.
    GOD Bless!
    Ben Crawford

  164. Sadie Says:

Happy Birthday!! I know it’s late, but I hope you don’t mind. =) And I love the quote at the end - a Do Hard Things from Jack Sparrow…..that’s a first!

  165. sarah weikle Says:

    hey
    happy birthday!!!!
my birthday was also oct.28 :)
    Sarah Weikle

  166. Rachel Says:

I like how your book is related to teens by teens.

  167. Rachel Says:

    Happy belated b-day

  168. Mrs. Key Says:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! Our family is so thankful to know you! What a rich blessing it is to see the Lord working in your lives. You will always be very welcome in out home! Blessings to you both, Mrs. Key for the fam:)

  169. Stephen G. Says:

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY!… again.
does anyone know when there birthday actually was?

  170. hilary Says:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!! wow, 20 years old!!!!!! congrats!

  171. Miss Sarah Jean Says:

Hey! I was very glad to be able to find your blog/website without any difficulty. I was just recently gifted your book by my Dad and I couldn’t help but go and find the authors of such a motivating and “rebelutionary” book! I just wanted to thank you for the time and research that you put into the writing and publishing of it. I have recently (I say recently, more like a year) started a blog as a way to share my faith. I was surprised that I never had heard the name of your blog in the “blogging circle” that I hang about. But now I have and am hoping to be able to visit regularly!
Anyway, I am a missionary together with my family in Mexico, and I love meeting Christians online. I find that the internet, though used many times as a tool of the enemy, can also be a wonderful tool of good and a great way to share your beliefs over long distances!
So, mostly I just wanted to stop by and wish you guys luck (bad wording, better said blessing) in your work here and abroad. Thanks again for the work that you guys are pouring into this! Oh, and Happy birthday!
    To God be the glory-

    Stephen G.,
Their birthday was the 28th of October.

  173. Sarah Pena Says:

Has anyone thought of what the big thing planned for 2010 is? Does anyone think it could be they are going to try and retake congress in a state wide campain? That’s what my family and I think. Anyone agree or have other ideas?

    God bless!

    Sarah. :)

  174. Janai Fuentes Says:

Happy Belated Birthday!! You guys have been very inspiring to me! I read one of your articles in a Decision magazine from Billy Graham about being salt to the world and then it got me thinking about what can I do from where I am, a home-schooled girl of 15 so I started a blog called Teen Impact! God bless both you guys! Thank you for being a great example to me and my friends!

  175. Cassie Says:

Just wanted to say a quick Happy Belated Birthday and a big thanks! Thank you both for wanting more than what was expected of you. You wanted it, and you worked for it, and it’s making a difference. You and the Rebelution have been a huge source of encouragement to me. And praise God that our struggle to honor Him does not stop when we turn 20!

    To God be the glory!

  176. Amanda Howell Says:

    Sarah Pena,

I had thought a little bit about the 2010 event. I hadn’t thought it would involve politics, though I suppose it wouldn’t really surprise me. I was thinking it might be some sort of conference with their new role in mind. Something gearing towards connecting rebelutionaries and how to put Hard Things ideas into action. (Hope that made sense)
Those were my thoughts on the event, but I suppose we won’t really know until they tell us. (sigh) I wonder how long we’ll have to wait before we find out.

    In Christ,
    A. N. H.

  177. Michelle Says:

Happy Birthday Alex and Brett! Congratulations on all your accomplishments. I’m sure that God has a great future in store for you both, and intends to use you in many different ways.

  178. Melanie Says:

    Happy Birthday!
God bless you for all your doing!
    thanks:D

  179. Savannah Says:

Happy birthday Alex and Brett! It’s great to know even though you guys are turning twenty you two aren’t giving up with us Rebelutionaries. God has a great plan in store for you two!

  180. Stephanie Says:

Happy Birthday!! Wow you guys are 20 minutes apart????? My twin and I are only 8 minutes apart. and my little sisters are only 3 minutes apart… Wow!! Anyway… thanks for not leaving us when you turn twenty… I am in the middle of reading your book Do Hard Things and so far it has really opened my eyes to alot of things. Thanks so much guys!!

  181. Gracie Martin Says:

So I’m not going to lie, when I first joined your blog in 2006, I was terrified that Brett might have been born before Alex… which would have been awful seeing as I am OCD and it would only make sense for A to come before B… Anyway, Happy birthday guys, thanks for all you have done in encouraging not only myself, but a ton of other people too,. I’m not really sure if you guys have any idea how much of an impact you two have truly made on my life. So thanks again and I hope you guys had an AMAZING day!

Also, tell your parents thanks for naming you in alphabetical order.

  182. Brett Harris Says:

Sarah Pena: Haha… We are definitely NOT planning anything political. The event is geared towards connecting rebelutionaries with each other, with mentors, and with resources to discover and pursue their holy ambitions. It will include any and every area of society and culture that Christians are called by God to influence (i.e. everything). Hope that tides you over (and stalls any rumors). =D

  183. alexis Says:

Happy belated birthday alex and brett! That was really cool getting to meet you at Extreme Camp! I saw you yesterday on the Daystar show, “Joni.” You have such a great ministry, ever teen in america needs to hear you guys speak! Thanks for all you do!

  184. Jose HC Says:

    Happy belated Birthday!
What an amazing work you two guys are doing… May the Lord keep you and strengthen you every step of the way!

    Press on!

  185. Ahlaischa Says:

  186. Bethany D. Says:

Seriously? I turned 20 on the 28th, too. Happy late birthday.

  187. Sarah Pena Says:

    Brett,

Well first off let me say I was so shocked and excited that you wrote back to me! I guess just because you and Alex are some of my top five heros. Your idea sounds wonderful though and I can’t wait till it comes about. Especially what you said about helping kids by giving them resources to discover and pursue their holy ambitions. I have a few Holy Ambitions but I will need resources and a lot of collaboration! But what do you think of starting a state wide campain for congress one day anyway? Our country really needs it and I think you guys are the perfect ones to start it.

    God bless!

    Sarah. :)

P.S. I apologize for starting the wrong rumor. Sorry!

  188. Kaitlin R. Farley Says:

Once again, I feel so young. Out of ten people, I am the youngest. Out of the hundred some posts on here, I am mostly the youngest at 12 years old! :(

  189. Jesse Sloan Says:

Thanks for this, guys. Last week it hit me: I have a little over a month left as a teenager. =0 While I don’t regret what I have done, I wish I had done more…..and now I’ve determined my twentys won’t be wasted either! =)

    Thanks.

  190. Eliane Says:

At least I’m not the only one who feels like they’re embarking on a completely new journey as I turn 20 in a few days. I only recently discovered your site and am so glad I did as I will be motivated to do more hard things even though I’m not going to be a teenager anymore. It’s great to see so many young people so motivated to make a difference.

  191. J. W. Says:

Happy Birthday!! Keep up the good work in the next twenty years!

  192. Sarah Says:

I’m a little late, but oh well. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

  193. Sarah in MS Says:

Wow, is it ever great to know that my twin sister (Rebekah) and I aren’t the only twins we know of who are at least 20 minutes apart!! (We’re 25 min. apart).

Happy Birthday about 3 1/2 months late!
