We Need Your Help (with the next book)

Brett and I are excited to announce the next step for the Rebelution. We’re working on a companion book to Do Hard Things, due to hit the shelves next spring. If Do Hard Things was the manifesto of the movement, we want this to be a handbook or field guide for rebelutionaries. That’s why we need your help.
If you’ve read Do Hard Things, we want to hear about your experience applying its message to your life. We want this new book to share your stories, answer your questions, and address the obstacles you’ve faced in your efforts.
Here’s a basic framework of what we’re looking for — but don’t let it limit you!
- Share a story of a hard thing, big or small, that you have done. What were your fears and hopes ahead of time? How did it go? What are your reflections now on what you did?
- What obstacles have you encountered when doing hard things or trying to get started? What have been your disappointments?
- What would you most like to ask Brett and me about doing hard things?
The deadline for gathering submissions is March 31st — just over three weeks from now. Please include your full name (and the first name you’d like us to use), along with your city and state. If you are sharing a personal story, please also include the name and phone number of someone who can vouch for you.
For legal reasons, we need to tell you that by emailing us you give us permission to freely use your story and the first name and city you provide, as well as to revise and edit your story as necessary. In legalese, you are releasing us and our publisher from “any and all claims, demand, and liability arising from the use of your story.”
We can’t wait to hear from all of you! Thank you in advance for taking the time to share your thoughts with us. Our prayer is that God would use this companion book to help rebelutionaries take the next step — and that’s only possible with your help.

March 9th, 2009 at 8:07 am
A new book? That’s awesome! Now you have me all excited!
I wish I could say I had a story to share or something, but alas, I don’t at the moment.
Really lookin foward to this, though. (:
March 9th, 2009 at 8:46 am
I’m so excited! I’ll definitely find something to send.
Suggestion: can you write a chapter about “hard things” in family life? It was mentioned a little in many areas of the book, but it’s an issue that you could use not only some of the Mally family’s work concerning siblings, but also offer encouragement to Rebelutionaries in broken families. I know that I would love to know what other like-minded teens have to say about their struggles with learning to serve and respect their family members in a Christ-like way.
I can’t wait to read the new book! I will certainly be praying!
March 9th, 2009 at 9:03 am
That’s awesome! I’m so excited! I’ll be praying for you guys.

March 9th, 2009 at 9:22 am
A NEW book! This is wonderful! I really enjoyed Do Hard Things, and cannot wait for the next book!
I’ll be praying!
March 9th, 2009 at 9:27 am
Awsome! Maybe I can send them something…
March 9th, 2009 at 9:35 am
So someone asked me at the conference if you were writing another book…..”No, not that I know of” I said. Hahaha.
This is wonderful.
March 9th, 2009 at 10:12 am
I can’t wait!!! I was hoping you guys would come out with another book. DHT was amazing. I’ll be praying for both of you as you write!
March 9th, 2009 at 11:59 am
I’ll be praying for the book’s success!
Here’s a suggestion: What if you did a section for stories about people who are in the process of doing a hard thing? For example, I met a few people on the forum that have helped me to start an organization to encourage reading called Road2Reading. We can’t say that it’s up and running, but we’re getting there! A section that talks about ideas like these might encourage other Rebelutionaries and give them ideas!
March 9th, 2009 at 12:06 pm
Cath: Yes! We definitely want stories from rebelutionaries around the world.
March 9th, 2009 at 1:41 pm
I’m so excited. I loved the DTH book. It challenged me to live my life to the full, and I’m having tons of fun doing it. Thanx alot, I’ll be praying for ya’ll.
March 9th, 2009 at 1:47 pm
Awesome!! I am only on the third chapter (My parents, three younger siblings, and I are doing it together. It’s going kind of slow, though.), and I am loving it!
March 9th, 2009 at 2:06 pm

March 9th, 2009 at 2:24 pm
SWEET! I will send you guys some stuff shortly. My family and I have been going through it as a family. I went and got the book and read it first. Then my Dad went out and bought it for everyone else in the family that could read. He liked what I was reading and what he had read as well. I will talk to him and will get you somethin

Brett,

Another book… WOOHOO! I’m getting started on writing my personal story… even if it doesn’t get in I’m so excited for the book! God bless you all BUNCHES!!!
March 9th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
Your first book was probably the best book I have ever read. It has personally inspired me to go beyond what I usually do. I can’t wait to write about it. I am definitely a new rebelutionist.
March 9th, 2009 at 4:05 pm
Hey guys,
I’m reading your book and I am sooooo greatful for it it’s changing my life already and i’m only a quarter of the way through! It’s amazing how low the expectations are for teens! I can’t wait for the next book! Keep on doin what your doin and God bless!!!
March 9th, 2009 at 5:16 pm
This is exciting. Is there a target length for the stories? I’m thinking about sharing something about the upcoming “Love the Least” event we’re getting ready to host in April. I’d like to talk to the others involved in this before writing anything so I can share some of their perspective too.
March 9th, 2009 at 5:17 pm
I’ll send my story ASAP. It’s gonna be coming through the mail though. I’ll try to send it tomorrow.
March 9th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
Oh wow another book! I thought that was coming, I am so excited for everyone who will read it. There are so many rebelutionaries all over the world, when ever I come on here to your site I always leave it feeling refreshed and encouraged. These days lots of times its hard to go against the grain of our culture without getting burned sometimes, but I have learned that through my Savior I can trust Him that its all worth it. I will try and write up some of my stories that resulted from reading your book and from becoming a Christian. thank you for sharing the message God has placed on your hearts! Oh and I am so glad you all are coming to D.C. this summer. I hope to see you all there!
March 9th, 2009 at 6:05 pm
this rocks….
already sent mine!!!!!!
March 9th, 2009 at 6:07 pm
Wow, the Lord sent us all quite a blessing when he created you guys. I am so glad to hear another book is on the way, for it shall be a great stepping stone to future greatness for many.
Lots of luck,
June
March 9th, 2009 at 8:32 pm
Excellent!! I will definitely get even more involved this time!
Your book was an inspiration to me when I embarked on a pretty big hard thing… a local christian newspaper. I am blessed to be able to say that after one year of printing, we are really starting to make an impact in our city!
Three weeks… I have a lot of thoughts to gather!
March 10th, 2009 at 6:45 am
Thankyou for coming out with another book!! I’m so excited!!! Since reading your last book, i constantly find myself looking to God for wisdom and guidance as well as strength and stability to face the challenges in my day to day life. I also feel like i can accomplish so much more because i know that i can do more than what society expects of me. God bless, and I will be praying for the progress of your book!!! =)
March 10th, 2009 at 8:26 am
Can’t wait for the new book!!!
March 10th, 2009 at 8:50 am
That’s so cool! Can’t wait!
Is this going to be something like a “sequel” to Do Hard Things?
March 10th, 2009 at 8:57 am
I’m so excited! I can’t wait for the new book.
March 10th, 2009 at 9:27 am
Cool! I’m really exited. I’ll surely be looking forward to this new book.
March 10th, 2009 at 10:41 am
Would you be intrested in a story about a young teen who is just starting to do hard things and how she planns to start?
March 10th, 2009 at 11:21 am
Dear Alex and Brett, I have read your book Do Hard Things and really enjoyed it. Just one thing keeps coming up in my mind. Regret from the past. In two yearsish I will be turning twenty. I will look back and wonder on how much time I wasted staying within my comfort zone. Now, it is even more difficult to get out of that zone as a almost post teenager. What do I do with this regret? Your book focuses on the “Teen” years; what about pre teens can they/have they do/done hard things? I also in regards to doing hard things sometimes start to focus on doing BIG hard things for God and forget the small hard things (like putting my pillows on my bed where they belong
there is a story behind this comment let me know if you want to learn more about it.) These are just some suggestions for you to address in your book (you don’t need to use my name or anything) Thanks in Christ, Anna H.
March 10th, 2009 at 11:36 am
Lissie: Yes, we are! We also would love to know what questions you have about doing hard things as you get started.
March 10th, 2009 at 11:55 am
Wonderful!! I am soo excited! I can’t wait till it’s out. Maybe i ahould start saving my money. Do you have a name, or is it secret? I will be praying for you, keep God first!
March 10th, 2009 at 11:58 am
I am soooo excited! I read DHT over Christmas break, then left it at home so my sisters can read it and pass it around their circle of friends. I have been recomending it to everyone who will listen ever since, and that’s a lot of people since I run the book table for our traveling ministry! haha
I also agree with Anna H. I have wasted a lot of time in the past, especially through my high school years, and regret that very much. I can’t help but think where I could be now had I just stepped up to the plate and done more then. I think there needs to be a chapter on how to move past the past and do hard things now, regardless. I will never be able to undo or fix anything that happened or didn’t happen in my past. But I can do hard things today, and am doing hard things now and planning more hard things for the future. But I think regret holds a lot of people back and that’s sad.
Also, I have stories of small victories - nothing major yet. I mean, they were hard for me, outside my comfort zone for sure, but not anything big like starting an organization or publishing a book…..yet. Would you be interested in those?
March 10th, 2009 at 12:06 pm
This sounds great!
Suggestion: write a chapter on doing hard things that at times don’t seem hard or big. I totally fall into this catagory because my family does foster care and homeschool me and my brother. It is definately hard. I am so far behind in school and can’t seem to catch up because of my work with the kids. It’s hard work, but it’s definately worth it for those kids!
Good luck with the new book! Blessings,
Missy
March 10th, 2009 at 1:56 pm

March 10th, 2009 at 3:04 pm
This is great guys! I’m so excited that you are writing another book! Quick question. You asked that we send the name/number of someone who can vouch for our story, does this person need to be someone other than a family member or does it matter? Thanks!
March 10th, 2009 at 5:18 pm
I was wondering how long you want our stories to be? I have a tendency to write too much.
March 10th, 2009 at 5:37 pm
Hey, I just finished reading “do hard things” last Thursday. I’m in the same boat as Anna H. except I turn 20 this April. (Not good!) I did some things in high school that were stretching experiences for me, but I could have done a lot more. I’m looking forward to your next book. Could you maybe address what to do now? I wish I had read “do hard things” when I was 12! Keep up the good work.
(If I can help in any way let me know.)
In His service, David.
March 10th, 2009 at 9:53 pm
I know that I already commented on this one, but I agree with David and Anna H. I felt a lot of regret that I didn’t do hard things sooner in life. I’m 18 and only have a year and a half until I’m not a teen anymore. I know I can do hard things at any age, but I still feel that I could have done more and feel guilty about it. If you could address that in your next book, I know people would find that extremely helpful.
March 11th, 2009 at 5:56 am
Way cool! I’ll be prayin’ for you guys!
March 11th, 2009 at 11:20 am
Wow! This is really neat! I’ll be praying that this next book will have as big of an impact as the first.
March 11th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
That’s great that y’all are writing a new book. I read Do Hard Things back in December and am ready to join in the fight against low expectations.
March 11th, 2009 at 2:12 pm
That is great that you both are writing another book! May God give you the right words to put in it and publish it in His perfect time and plan. What a blessing your DHT book is. I purchased it at the Resolved conf. last June and finished it really fast-it was so good! Also recently, my little sister likes it, too. That is the first book she pulls down from my shelf and hands it to me to read to her!
God bless you both and may Jesus be glorified in all we think, say, and do!
March 12th, 2009 at 12:28 pm
AWESOME! You guys are doing great. I am super excited about seeing what God has in store for both of you! Keep up the good work!
-Mal
March 12th, 2009 at 4:41 pm
This is great! My dad bought me Do Hard Things for my 18th birthday just recently. I read it too quickly the first time. I’m going to read it again and, this time, take notes.
May God give you patience and wisdom as you read through all the stories I’m sure you’ll receive!
March 12th, 2009 at 6:39 pm
Hey guys, Your book DHT was amazing! I absolutely loved it! It really challenged me to do hard things for God and really take a stand. I always thought that me only being 14 ment that I couldn’t really do anything. But, of course- that’s not true! You guys are awesome!
March 12th, 2009 at 6:58 pm
WOO! you guys are excellent writers and have a true talent! can’t wait til the next book!
March 12th, 2009 at 8:07 pm
hey Alex, do you and Brett mind if I ask what you plan on calling the book? I told my parents about you guys writing a new book and both of them first thing asked me what it is called lol
Thanks. Anna H.
March 13th, 2009 at 9:40 am
Than you Alex and Brett for what you have done and continue to do! Do Hard Things challenged me to rethink the way I was living my life. I look forward to sitting down and writing up my story as it has happened so far. My Rebelution story is still in its begining stages. Thanks again and I am looking forward to the new book.
Jarrod L.

Can’t wait for your next book! I love “Do Hard Things”. It’s inspired my best friend and I to rebell against low expectations. We’ve even talked about writing a book about our journey together and the hardships of living in a world all about impure things. I’m praying for you and your family and the coming along of your new book!! Blessings!

March 16th, 2009 at 8:26 am
I’m in the middle of reading your book DoHardThings, and it’s opened my eyes to realize that, yes, i can do things well for MY age, but now i realize i CAN do harder things and do things that push my limit. I’ve always been content with being a good musician, athlete, and get good grades. But now i realize i have a bigger potential than that. Like maybe i can start a ministry through my track team. Or maybe join praise and worship band in our church. This book has really made me think. Or in pole vaulting, yes i can clear about 5 and a half feet, but why not work to go up farther? In cross country, why not push my self to go farther or faster? Improve my time? Or with my music, try to make my own song? there are a lot of things i COULD do, i’ve just never thought i needed to because everybody already praised me for my good work. I’ve always known that there is always that extra mile i can push mysaelf to and i’m ready to do that. Why not, instead of just getting good grades, help and tutor others to as well? I know if i push myself i could do it. With God, i dont need to be afraid to push myself. I know i will fall and fail some, that shoudb’t stop me though! Failure shoudn’t stop me. I know God wants me to push my potential and break free of my comfort zone. I hope this book opens other teens eyes as it did mine. Brett & Alex it astonished me to read the previous things you did that led up to this book. I’m only thirteen but that doesn’t mean i can’t do big things. I’m already involved in high school sports but that shoudn’t be enough for me. After i do something big for my age, i always have this pit in my stomach knowing that even though good for my age, it wasn’t good for the potential i really have. Thank you so much for writing Do Hard Things and opening my eyes to all of the potential and possibilities i have!
-Izzy

This is awesome! I am so looking forward to the next book. Do Hard Things really changed a lot of areas in my life, I was so blessed with it. I pray that this new book will be just as much as a blessing to others, and myself as well. I am excited to see how the Lord will use it!
God Bless You Guys!

Can’t wait for the new book! I appreciate the biblical challenges you guys are allowing God to set though you. Keep up the good work.
You two make writing seem half-easy. Do you need to start doing something harder?

DHT really taught me alot of things. But the main thing that I learned and got out of it was to never just let myself fall and get by with what people saw as my best, but in reality, I could have done better. I have learned to better appreciate my youth and understand that it’s not meant to be wasted by always being on the computer, talking or texting on the phone, or even reading! It’s meant to be used as an introduction to the world, to understand that plan God has for us, and I’m already cleaning out my closet. Thank you for the book. Thank you for telling it like it is.

I just started reading the Do Hard Things book when my youth pastor decided to do a study on it. Its already changing my life, Im organizing a youth service by myself, and it might not seem like much, but running a band at 15 can be crazy, so your book has helped me not quit my dreams and the dreams of the band. Thank you and God Bless you Alex and Brett…. =D

wow! I’ve just started reading your book! I read about Heidi and how hard it was for her, not liking to making phone calls and all! That was a big encouragement to me! I’m not the type to step out there and do things, but this book has been a great encourager! Thank you, Alex and Brett!

I started to read your book a second time to get an idea of what big hard things I can do, but i can’t think of anything. Then I realised that I don’t have to do big hard things all the time, so I thought I’d do smaller ahrd things and work my way up. And also, for the first time this year (I just got my report card in the mail)I got a B in Accelerated English. I know it’s just a B, but before I was getting D’s and C’s, which does not look good for college, but your book helped me learn to push myself harder in everything I do. I’m hoping to get an A next quarter, but if I don’t I can still know I pushed myself. because a B for me in that class is really awesome. And it brought my GPA up, of course. Thanks so much fro writing Do Hard Things and I’m looking foreward to the new book. Peace

Hey Guys! This past election I volunteered with my Presidential canidate’s party. I called people all around the U.S trying to raise awareness. I wrote a ton of letters to our congressmen in Texas and around the US about my opinions. I really enjoyed helping out. I’ve always been a “normal looking teen” but FAR from “normal” as far as my standards/how I act/thoughts/etc… It was hard for me to keep to my/my parents standards. It kind of seemed like I was alone in it all - but thanks to the book “Do Hard Things” I felt encouraged that there was a lot of other teens out there just like me - daring to shine amongst the masses. Thanks for the encouragement!!!! I needed it =D

what u guys did encouraged not only me but my whole senior class in my youth group. it has made us realize that we need to take the lead with our senior high pastor leaving us. so we all read it and now we are applying it to our lives as a youth group. we are leading a youth group with what u guys showed us. what u did is an encouragement to us so that we can keep going at our ages. we saw what God did in u and we wanted him to work in our youth group at our church here in Michigan. so we took up our cross like Jesus calls us to and we are leading a group of 300+ students. nine seniors as a example for5 the other students to look at. also we are claiming our campuses with a group called Claim Your Campus. a prayer movement through out the youth of the nation. we are praying for our high schools everyday of the week. praying that God will be put back into the public school systems. this is all from ur book. the guy that started Claim Your Campus is a former pastor that read your book and he took his cross and devoted his life to a non profit organization called Never the Same. he did the same thing that is he said if they did it a young age so can i at the age of 35. that’s what your book has shown me, an 18 year old child of Christ.

I like your point about Individuals, Psychology, and Philosophy. thanks towards the beneficial photographs. In addition to knowing how men and women imagine and react, we can also get lessons and values in these topics that we can incorporate in our writing approach and overall behavior towards writing.Jenny

Thanks for your content. One other thing is when you are disposing your property alone, one of the challenges you need to be conscious of upfront is when to deal with property inspection records. As a FSBO vendor, the key about successfully switching your property as well as saving money with real estate agent profits is know-how. The more you are aware of, the more stable your home sales effort are going to be. One area in which this is particularly critical is information about home inspections.
