I’m so happy to have guys like you that stand up for what we need to believe in and that we need to higher our expectations. Thanks for all you do!

  34. Katie M. age 14 Says:

I really wish I could go! I love BarlowGirl and the Rebelution! You guys should definatly come to PA! Like Harrisburg for CHAP. BTW! Is any one going to CHAP and doing the teen track? I am going to CHAP and hopefully doing the teen track!

  35. Alesha Says:

    Oh Wow!
That sounds absolutely and totally amazing! God can do wonders with something like that! I LOVE BarlowGirl’s ministry and I am a TOTAL rebelutionary so that would be great!

Unfortunately, I think another trip to Chicago (I attended the Rebelution conference in Chicago last summer) would not work at such a time. I will be really busy planning for my Rebelution DVD conference then. I am also not sure that I could afford it.

I don’t know. If God wants to open that door, it would be great! We’ll see =)
I will definitely be praying for the whole thing, though!
    Thanks for sharing!

  39. Elizabeth Says:

This is the the best combination. . .ever! Its so neat that you’re teaming up. Hope the day is fantastic. Thanks for all you do!

  40. richard brooker Says:

You guys are incredible at doing hard things—deceiving young people, leading Christians astray and getting paid to do so. These are indeed hard things to do! The last people to be so good at these hard things were the Catholics during the dark ages. Go on “you tube” and watch the Barlow Girls salute Satan as they sing a “million voices”. I was amazed to watch them do their best imitation of Black Sabbath all in the name of “God”. The only “god” these girls know is the “god of this world” as they prostitute themselves to him. I am one voice standing against your spiritual adultery. Too bad your Dad has not done so. Apparently, he like Eli has become too old, too fat and too spiritually anemic to rebuke his own sons. May the Lord Jesus Christ reveal to you the spiritual harm that you are doing in the land.

Brett’s Response: I’m genuinely sorry that you feel that way, Richard. If you have some specific concerns and practical suggestions we would love to hear them (and a direct email is a better way to handle those). As it is, you are comparing Becca, Lauren, and Alyssa to a heavy metal rock group — and calling one of their songs a salute to Satan. I would encourage you to watch this YouTube video where the girls explain their heart behind the song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9iowesNosE . . .

  41. Lindsay Says:

I have always been a big fan of BarlowGirl & of course The Rebelution. Sadly, I won’t be able to attend seeing I live too far away but I will pray that all goes well & according to plan. (:

  42. donna g Says:

“Tell me who’d have thought that we would be so controversial
    And stand against the normal
Are we too outspoken, loud, and messing up the comfortable?
Well we’ve been messed up also

But how can we be silent
When a fire burns inside us
‘Cause we’re a million strong and getting stronger still…”
    - A million voices

    A salute to Satan, indeed.

  43. Spiritual Warrior Says:

That Richard guy is so deceaved. He honestly thinks it is wrong to encourage kids to pray, read the Bible, and act their age unlike himself. Hey, Richard, I will pray for you!

  44. AmyT Says:

Although I do not agree with the tone of Richard’s post, I do sometimes question the witness of BarlowGirls. Although the lyrics that you posted, Donna, sound fine, I personally think that they are a bit “in the world”… the type of music that accompanies these words, the way they dress, etc. I am not saying that these things make their music bad or anything. I just feel that these things detract and distract from the message of their songs for me personally.

    ~Amy

  45. Michelle =D Says:

Wow! I love BarlowGirl! Their song “Keep Quiet” is so touching….

“Why are we so scared to tell this world You’ve saved us
When all of the hope of the world’s in Your name
Why are we so scared to say
    Oh, Jesus”

Thanks for teaming up with them for the Chicago conference! ;D

  46. Kate M. age 14 Says:

Brett, I love the way you handled richard! It was so gracious and godly. I still am endevering to respond to critisism like that.

  47. Emily Rose Says:

Brett, thank you for providing a Godly, and gracious response to the critisism. I pray that we may all learn to respond in that manner.
    In Christ,
    Emily

  48. Meg Says:

I have been trying to think what to say ever since I saw this post first come up… and after seeing one person’s criticism I decided to modify my tone :).
I do not want to question the witness of BarlowGirl in any way, and I have no doubt that they are true believers. I love some of their music, and have even taught myself to play it on the piano! The song “Million Voices” seems very powerful and inspiring, although I have never heard it before tonight.
I will say that I am sometimes distracted and perhaps disappointed in their actions and manner of dressing on-stage… but every Christian girl will have to decide for themselves what their standard of modesty is, and although mine may be different, that doesn’t mean that Lauren, Alyssa, and Becca are heathens!

  49. Meg Says:

Woopsie, I hit “submit” without meaning too… but it looks like I said everything I wanted to. Anyway, God bless BarlowGirl as they continue to strive for righteousness, and they are my sisters in Christ wether or not I agree with them on everything!
    ~Meg

  50. Lexi Says:

Brett, thank you so much for giving that Godly and polite response to criticism. I was hurt for you guys when I read it…you both are such an encouragement to us all, and this again proved why we all look up to you.

  51. Richard Says:

    Brett,
Thanks for letting me participate in the conversation regarding the Rebelution teaming up with Barlowgirl. Although I agree with Kate M. that your response was gracious, my comments were not intended to produce sorrow; repentance was what I had in mind. (Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing.(II Cor. 7:9) I also agree with AmyT in that I sincerely didn’t like the tone of my comments either. But after 38 posts fawning all over your decision to team up with Barlowgirl, perhaps I got a bad case of “righteous indignation”. Let me ask your fellow “Rebelutionaries” how they like the tone of Matthew 23 where Jesus confronted the religious leaders of His day with words like “hypocrites”, “blind guides”, “ye fools and blind”, “ye serpents”, ye generation of vipers”. Your version of doing hard things will get a young person on Focus on the Family or the New York Times best seller list; Jesus version of doing hard things will get you on a cross.

    ———————————–
Brett’s Response: Richard, my primary concern was not with the tone of your first comment, but I was frustrated by your lack of specifics. Jesus certainly didn’t pull any punches in Matthew 23, but He also gave reasons for His accusations. Of course, He also knew the hearts of those He accused, which makes this situation different. Nevertheless, this second comment is much more helpful and, now that I understand where you are coming from, I appreciate your concerns.

For instance, I absolutely agree that Christ’s version of doing hard things will get you on a cross. We are all called to pick up our cross daily and follow Him. Just yesterday I turned down an invitation to go on a road trip with some of my best guy friends in order to spend the weekend getting work done for our ministry. This is only a small thing, but is one way I am trying to die to self and serve God.

I am truly grieved that you think our message simply encourages selfish glory-seeking. That goes against everything we have said and written about why and how we do hard things. If there are certain ways you think we are encouraging that mindset (as opposed to people simply coming to our message with that mindset) we are very open to your feedback.
    ———————————–

Now Brett, I did not say that the song a Million Voices was a salute to Satan. I said watch the girls (the brunette guitar player on the right–Alyssa) on you tube salute Satan as they sing the song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJFHJNf9iZ8 Donna G, you posted selective words to Million Voices. What about the words “they’ll remember we were here with a million voices, breaking silence til they’ll remember we were here; we were made to start the riot…” I can see why you chose to edit those words. Where is Jesus or God in this song? Where is the gospel (or sanity for that matter) in this ridiculous “song”. Brett, you are right; this song is not a salute to Satan. It is a salute to self—”they’ll remember we were here”. Isn’t self and Satan two ways of saying the same thing? Spiritual Warrior, take a break from prayer my friend and learn to spell “deceaved” so I can take your comments serious.

    ———————————–
Brett’s Response: There is certainly an element of self-exaltation in any generation’s desire to make a difference. This desire to have a voice and make an impact is not wrong, but it needs to be directed properly. I did not write this song, so I’m not going to spend a lot time defending it — however, I will say this: Every person/group can be judged on their motives and/or their execution. I believe the Barlow sisters’ motives for writing Million Voices were communicated genuinely in the video I linked to above. Their execution may not be perfect (no one’s ever is), but until I can write a better one I’m glad they are out there inspiring young adults to love God and make a difference in the world.
    ———————————–

The Barlow girls are doing what Israel of old did that brought God’s chastisement…”They feared the LORD, and served their own gods, after the manner of the nations whom they carried away from thence.” (II Kings 17:33) Barlow girls talk about “God” and purity and modesty, then promptly go on stage in their body suits and jump, thrash their heads around, gyrate and beat on drums like they are possessed. There is nothing modest, feminine or godly about these sisters but their “fair speeches”. “For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.” (Romans 16:19) If what I am saying is too hard for you, then you probably have “drunk the Kool-Aid”. Wake up Rebelutionaries if you want us to take you seriously.

    ———————————–
Brett’s Response: You are judging Alyssa, Becca, and Lauren very harshly on a heart/soul level — but what really seems to be going on is very different opinions on the kind of music and clothing Christians should wear. Once again I think you could benefit from separating motives from execution. You do not know their hearts. You are not their judge. They stand and fall before their King. As it is, they are reaching a large segment of my generation with the Gospel that you (and I) may never reach.

In closing, given the gracious reception you have received here, I would strongly encourage you to change your tone in any future comments. Pointing out spelling errors in other people’s posts is completely unnecessary. If you will only take someone seriously if they have perfect spelling, then no one will care whether you take them seriously or not. You have some good things to say, but your approach could use improvement. In other words, Alex, Alyssa, Becca, Lauren, and I are not the only ones who need to work on execution. ;)

I hope you can see that, despite some obstacles, I have taken your concerns very seriously. I hope you will take mine seriously as well. Thank you again for taking the time to share here. There is no need for you to be so hostile. We will not be hostile back.

  52. Daniel Young Says:

Oh that is so awesome can you come to pittsburgh pleassssssssssssseeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!
    your fellow blogger daniel young

  53. Kate M. age 14 Says:

I so agree with Danial Young! Pleeeeeeeeeeese come to Pittsburg!!!!!!!!! Richard, you a just Satan’s instrument to sow seeds of discord among an organisation that Satan hates.

  54. Kate M. age 14 Says:

I just reread my post. I was waaaaaaaaayyyyyy to harsh to Richard. I am sorry, Richard, I spoke in anger.

  55. Britt Says:

Wow! So exciting! BarkowGirl is one of my favorite Christian music groups. Although I probably won’t be able to attend, I will have the conference/concert in my prayers. God Bless.

  56. Britt Says:

    oops… typo.. Barlow Girl

  57. Richard Says:

    Brett,
My intent in communicating with you was to cause some pause to the direction of your life and ministry at a crucial point—nothing more. Although I will not be the Barlow sisters’ Ultimate Judge (as you pointed out) I am instructed by Scripture to judge all things…But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. (I Cor. 2:15) If you don’t mind, I believe I’ll take God’s advice on the matter. Just because I am not one of your rebelutionary “groupies” wearing your T-shirts, begging you to “come to my city” or participating in your “book bomb” doesn’t mean I am hostile. It means I am concerned for you and the body of Christ enough to confront you for making merchandise of God’s people—something Jesus rebuked soundly (John 2:16…And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father’s house an house of merchandise.) Teaming up with the Barlow sisters is just one more giant step in that direction.

Brett’s Response: This is a concern that I take very seriously. In fact, it has something that I am still wrestling with before God. We are really trying to balance covering our expenses so we can continue to pursue ministry and not requiring money for people to enjoy what we provide. That is why we have always offered with a “Pay-What-You-Can” policy for all of our conferences, t-shirts, and resources. That is why we give away one free book for every one that is purchased during our book bombs. If you have suggestions for a more biblical approach I would take it seriously.

I believe you when you say that you have taken some of my points seriously. However, communicating with you has been very frustrating because you intentionally or unintentionally avoided the main reason I wrote you—Do you not see Alyssa Barlow repeatedly flashing the salute to Satan as they sing Million Voices? Yes or No? If no, you are blind or a liar. If yes, do you think that is merely a matter of execution? What if she shot the audience a “bird”; would that bother you? If so, why or why not.

Brett’s Response: I’m sorry if I missed your main point. I didn’t realize that was your main point. If you want to email a link to the specific video you are referencing (there are three or four of them performing that song on YouTube) I will look at it.

I do thank you for the “gracious reception I received”; I was only called “deceaved” and Satan’s tool! I really got a kick out of your “child crusaders” posts in response to our exchange. A man is wise to know when he is whipped. You really handled me Brett. That is what I get for playing in somebody else’s back yard. I was taught in speech class to stand up, speak up, sit down and shut up. It is time for me to shut up!

Brett’s Response: I’m really sorry for those who responded in anger to your comments. I’m sure it was a defensive reaction to something they didn’t quite know what to do with. I’m also sorry you feel “handled” — that was definitely not my intention.

  58. Nikki Says:

alex and brett, thank you sooooo much for all you do. i can totally see God working through you guys. you are an amazing example to all young people. i love you guys and barlowgirl too =) i TOTALLY hope i can come and i live 16 hours away =) praying for you!!

  59. Jordan Clark Says:

    Hey Guys!

I just wanted to invite you to my blog, I read your book and it really inspired me to begin writing. Check it out, it’s http://theriverjordan.net

If you visit, leave a comment and let me know! God bless you guys!

  60. Richard Says:

Who took my post down and why?

  61. Alison Says:

Whoa! barlowgirl?!?! =) this is so amazing! i wish i could go. i hope you guys have fun with it!

  62. Jarred Says:

So why is it we have people come in and worry about spelling mistakes when we should be focusing on the Lord at all times. Some people need to settle down and pray about that. And nobody here is being deceived by Alex and Brett at all.

  63. Chloe Says:

I would love to go, but we won’t be able to make it this year. I went two years ago with my brother, Mum and some friends, and the conference was very inspiring. The twins’ book is on my shelf, and I still find something new that stands out every time I read it. Barlow Girl is one of my favorite bands, and I would love to see them live, even if it was just once. Hope every one who goes has fun.

    God bless!!

  64. Laura Says:

Ah, I would LOVE to come, but sadly I don’t live anywhere near Chicago. :-( I’ll be praying for you guys anyway!

    God bless,
    ~Laura

  65. kath Says:

  66. Cici Says:

    Sounds amazing! To bad I live 20+ hours away :( . . . . COME TO TEXAS!!!!!!!!!

  67. Danielle Says:

Wow this sounds amazing….unfortunately i live in PA and wont be able to come. Have you ever considered coming to the Philadelphia area?

  68. Sarah Says:

Ohhhhhhh, If only I lived closer!

  69. N.T. Says:

    Richard,

I hope it’s alright with the Harrises if I weigh in on the concerns presented here. :)

I do believe you had the intention of bringing up some very good points that all of us rebelutionaries should be concerned about and seek to practice better discernment regarding. However, as others have pointed out, the way you did it and some of the additional things you said made me want to disregard everything you said.

We must all remember that if we are to present truth in the Name of Jesus in a truly God-honoring way, we must present it in genuine love — or else turn people away from both the truth we present and God Himself.

It’s easy to pick and choose Bible verses that back up our belief system and use them against people, pointing out what they may very well be doing wrong; it’s hard to take the Bible as a whole and use the truth it presents in context of the character of love, grace, and genuine care for the souls of others that God intended that it be presented with.

In other words, yes, warn and exhort others regarding how they are to lead for the sake of their souls and the innocent souls that follow them, but first see what Scripture has to say about your own heart and how you are to approach them for the sake of your own soul.

You encouraged “Spiritual Warrior” to take a break from prayer so that you might take his comments seriously. I would sincerely encourage you to take a break from commenting to get on your knees and pray. One of the world’s great needs is not more people to criticize so that hearts will be crushed with truth that was not there until we spoke, but more men of prayer so that hearts will be open and softened towards the truth God spoke that is readily available to any who will truly seek.

We could all use greater discernment regarding the music, television shows, movies and books out there — both those labeled Christian and secular. We could all use greater discernment regarding our friends, mentors, pastors and the evangelists of our day. And we could all use greater courage to stand and speak up for the sake of our souls and theirs.

I think the biggest reason for this is because of the Biblical illiteracy prevalent in our nation — we choose to be deceived because we fail to choose to arm ourselves with the truth of Scripture in preparation, in training for our careers, in daily practice on the battlefield. Evil can distract, deceive and even work through many in the American church because we do not love God’s Word and really treasure it and do all, no matter, to simply see what He says and then conform ourselves to it.

But we also have to remember that we war not against flesh and blood — our battle is primarily a spiritual one. When filled with God’s Love, speak. But even more, pray that we would all have discernment — fight for us in prayer. We need men of God who will not shrink back or busy themselves from fighting the real battle waged that costs many of us — even our leaders — their souls.

God could use you greatly in the future, Richard, to speak needed truth to my generation, but not unless your heart is filled with His Love. Without genuine love for God as He is, Alex and Brett and Alyssa and Becca and Lauren and I and all that we try to offer this world, even in God’s Name, is as nothing. But the same is true about you. And love for God — true love for Him — is always evidenced by love for one another. Pray to God to break your heart, change your heart, make you real, as we all must daily pray.

This is getting long, but I want to quickly share one more thing before I close. Yes, Alex and Brett do post many stories about success. Yes, they are successful. And because of this young people do oftentimes not look any deeper into their message and so only say, “God calls me to do hard things that I might be successful!” and proceed with wrong heart motives. But that is definitely not always how the story goes.

Just this last week, I shared the Gospel with twelve of my friends who profess to be Christians, but who were participating in dangerous worldly things and showed little evidence of love for God. The response was hurtful. I am definitely not popular anymore amongst them because of it. I am even being treated badly still and slandered because of it. And I’ll have you know that Brett’s speech from the National Bible Bee is much to thank for my laying my popularity, friendships and heart on the line for the sake of their souls’. :P

We could all focus our witness more on that which will lead us to crosses and the praise of God alone than on that which will lead us to a stage and the praise and adulation of man. Many times when I am talking with my friends I realize they are merely talking about my accomplishments rather than hearing needed truth and encouragement and getting a full picture of the Gospel I believe and am trying to live — I am accepting praise and glory deserved by God alone and I need to do or say something to change that.

May He change not only those with a platform who attract much attention and many followers but all of us in great and powerful and unmistakeable ways that the world might be changed through each of us like in the days of Acts — Soli Deo Gloria. Pray this for our generation — all of us.

  70. Richard Says:

    Brett,
Our dialogue over the last few days has taught me a lot about you. I have concluded that you are very patient, mature and approachable. These are impressive qualities. “The ear that heareth the reproof of life abideth among the wise.” (Prov. 15:3)

Somehow you and I have experienced “a failure to communicate” in that I linked for your convenience the you tube video of the Barlow sisters hand signing the “el diablo” Satan salute in my second post above. It is in red glaring at you. Check it our please!

    ————————
Brett’s Response: Thank you for your kind words, Richard. I truly respect your boldness to share with us this way.

I’m sorry I missed the link in your last comment. I just watched the video and I’m pretty sure I saw the gesture you are referring to. I must admit, I am very skeptical that Alyssa was purposefully flashing a salute to satan.

I’m sure there are pictures and/or videos of me holding my hand in the same position — and I didn’t even know what it was until today.

I realize this is important to you, but I think your other concerns carry much more weight and have the potential to be much more helpful than this one.

In conclusion, thank you again for voicing your concerns. Your comments have sparked some honest reflection on my part about our ministry and the direction we’re headed. It was a good reminder of important truths. May God richly bless you! =)

Richard, I said I was sorry! And if I recall you called us “deseaved” first. You need to make sure you don’t contradict yourself in an argument.

Hey Richard, I don’t know if you are still looking at this chat room, but I do kind of think that you have a point when you said that you weren’t one of the Harris’s “groupies”. I wrote an article and am still working on it in the Rebelution Forum. It should be out soon so if you are a member of the forum you should be reading it soon. It has to do with the “groupie” idea. Sort of.

  73. Allison R. Says:

Wow, Brett. I am impressed. I know several people have already said this, but the way you answered to Richard was so godly. I hope that I would be able to answer to someone so calmly! I have so much respect for you after reading this!

I really don’t care for the Barlow Girl group as singers, but in saying this, I do not know anything about them and their music may be glorifying to God, I just listen, so I would not know. One thing I do know is that I have seen them several times in pictures with very innapropriate, imodest clothing, and that is saddening.
At the same time, I love the Newsboys! And yes, they have worn mascara in their concerts before, and they do have “christian rock” songs.
I think we need to be really careful that we aren’t judging anyone here, it is up to each person to decide in their heart what God thinks is okay, modesty, song/songwriting, ect.
Anyway, I also will be praying for you, Richard.

  74. Alissandra Says:

Oh I would LOVE to go to this! BarlowGirl is one of my fave bands. And obviously I’m a fan of the Rebelution too. Unfortunately it’s too far away :(

  75. Alissandra Says:

Btw Brett you handled that very well. Richard, I think what you are complaining about has to do with personal standards. Everyone has different standards for modesty and different things like that. I’m praying for you. Btw, I’ve never seen the BarlowGirl’s gyrate in jumpsuits.

    Allison & Kate,
I responded to your posts last Saturday night but apparently it was not approved by the powers that be. There was nothing profane or ugly in it. I simply responded to your posts. So much for freedom of speech. Maybe you should ask Brett what I said.
    Best Regards

My student ministries pastor had some questions about the event that I e-mailed to info@therebelution.com… how long should I wait for a response? (It’s been a week and a half…) Just wondering..

  78. Kate M. age 14 Says:

Ok, I will but I probably won’t through to Brett and if I do he may not tell me what you said.

  79. Sarah Says:

I love BarlowGirl, but, sadly, I live in AL and can’t make it. If all goes well, please consider us here in the South. I am very disappointed about what Richard said. How Can We Be Silent is not my favorite CD of theirs, but I saw them preform Million Voices at DisneyWorld’s Night of Faith 2007. They were amazing, and I would encourage you (meaning all who have negative feelings about the BarlowGirls) to listen to their new CD Love & War, especially Come Alive and the beautifully eloquent love song to Jesus Our Worlds Collide.

BarlowGirl ROCKS!!! I love how they gave their hearts to their parents and God and their modesty standard. I, like you, Sarah, am not going to be able to make it either. I live in Missouri and can’t make it up there. I do hope Alex and Brett come to Mo. sometime soon. (Oh, and bring the Girls). I think they are awesome role models of what all teen girls should act. I love their song “Beautiful Ending”. i heard that they wrote that song because they had read about so many people in the Bible that had served God by going into the ministry but had a tragic ending at the end and completely forgot about who they were serving. That’s why they were resisting the nudge to go into ministry. I’m feeling “the nudge” to go into ministry too, but i also don’t want to have a “tragic ending” either. i want to serve God ALL the time and not blow it at the end.

  81. Stephanie D. Says:

That is so AWESOME! Sadly I live in NC and unless my parents want to take a really long “detour” May 1, I can’t come to the show. ;)
I really like Alex and Brett Harris’ ministry and I LOVE BarlowGirl’s music. I agree with Katelynne “Beautiful Ending” is an AMAZING song, it really encourages you to keep your eyes on what’s important.

“So tell me, what is our ending?
Will it be beautiful, so beautiful?
Will my life find me by your side?
Your love is beautiful, so beautiful.”
    - Beautiful Ending (BarlowGirl)

  83. Kyra-Top Says:

That is awesome!!! love Barlow Girl!!!
“who are you to tell me that im less than what i should be?
    who are you?
i dont need to listen to the list of things i should do
    i wont try
    no i wont try ”
    ~ Mirror *Barlow Girl*
