Update on our Mom

Photos by Andie Haugen, taken last week. A blessing from God.

Many of you have asked for an update on how our mother is doing. Our older brother Josh recently shared the following on his blog:

Several of you have asked about how my mom is doing (see this post for background on her fight with cancer). Thank you. We really appreciate your concern and prayers for her. The short answer is that her spirit is strong but her body is failing quickly. In the past few days in particular, she has grown very weak. We’re sad but have come to the realization that it seems to be God’s will to take her home sooner than we had hoped. At this point there’s nothing that doctors can do. That being said, Mom speaks joyfully about seeing Jesus soon. She is not afraid of death. She knows that her Redeemer lives.

Thank you all so much for your love and prayers. This is a very hard thing, but God is good. It is in His strength that we do and endure hard things. Soli Deo gloria!

  5. Adoption Mama Says:

My own mother went home to be with the Lord on April 21st of this year. She was diagnosed with lung cancer and also attempted the Budwig Protocol. She is with Jesus now and had the very same attitude your mother does. She just thanked Jesus every day for the cancer and is now worshipping Him. I miss her so much. But God does give the grace needed when the time comes. My prayers are with you.

Stand strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might.

Let His joy be your strength.

Yes, this is such a hard thing: but, praise the Father, the end result is glory! The Refiner’s fire is hot, and the refining process hurts…but in the end, His image will be reflected as in a mirror.

I know, as I know *you* know, that this, most certainly, is not the end. One day He will make all things new!

You are all in my prayers; may God give you the grace to stand strong, and may He hold your hearts close to His.

How hard… an unexpected trial. Continuing to pray for you and your family.

“3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5 who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 9 obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.”

    Praying…

  26. Ken Stewart Says:

My heart goes out to you two guys, your mother, and all of your family in this difficult time. My mind goes back to the Shakespearean line which C.S. Lewis quotes in his autobiography in regard to his own mother’s death—a line which, I am told, is engraved in part on his own tombstone: “Men must bear their going hence, even as their coming hither.”

  27. Rebeca Says:

My prayers are with all of you!!!

  28. Rae Says:

Praying for your mom. That God will do a miracle and many will believe through that. Its such a hard thing to lose someone so special, but to know where they’ll be is such a great joy. My family has a very close friend, Kay, who is such a neat Christian lady and the doctors are so amazed she’s lived this long. She’s fading, too, fast from cancer. But she’s looking forward to her life in heaven. Keep us posted.

  41. Tyrene Gary Says:

I just saw the blog about your mom, I am very saddened by your report but …GOD! I knew your mom at City Bible years ago, my prayers and thoughts are with your family and I will choose to hold on to the Lord’s promise of healing for your mom! He’s a good God all the time and a God of miracles so may His will be done! May the Sahlom peace of God fill each of your lives and may a deeper faith arise within your hearts. You are blessed to have such a mighty woman of God as a mom.

Wow, guys. Your mom is amazing. I pray that the Lord will bless you and give you peace. I know what that is like- I almost lost my amazing father to cancer this past fall (he was miraculously healed, though).

  47. Leah Says:

Prayers for you and your family. Knowing that something is going to happen ahead of time doesn’t make it any easier. However, Jesus will not give you burdens above what you are able to bear, just put it all on Him - His shoulders are more than able to carry this burden you have.

May the Lord continue to bless your family and remember - with God ALL things are possible.

  48. Chloe Says:

I am praying for all of you, and am sorry that your mother is suffering. Remember that when she leaves this earth, she will be safe in the arms of Jesus, and that there will never be any more pain for her.

    God bless….

  49. Laura Says:

    Hey Guys,

Even though this is a very, very hard time, I know you and your family are trusting in the Lord which is a great encouragement to me…to see a family trust in God when it is easy to be mad at Him for letting something like this happen.

There is a time for everything, but all through those times, praise the LORD, we have a God who is always there waiting to give us comfort and peace. Praying for your Mom and family.

    God Bless…Laura

Wow, I will continue to be praying for you guys!

I’m so sorry to hear that your mother has cancer…I kinda know a little how you feel…my grandma and now grandpa both have different cancers, it’s a very life-changing experience to go through–for the those who have to go through it and their loved-ones!
I’m hoping that while my grandpa and grandma fight this that it will only draw them to Jesus!!
I hope that your mom will recover safe and soon!

    Dear Harris family,

Tears spill out of my eyes as I read this post and the comments with it. God has used you all to bless our lives, and I can only say that I am praying. Praying for Mrs. Harris’s comfort. Thanking God that her strength and hope is in Him. Knowing that even though this world may come crashing in, God is still in control and His will is done in every instance for His glory. We have such a wonderful God! Blessed be His name, even in the wilderness and the storm!

    Your sister,
    ~Meg

  63. Rachael Adolphs Says:

May God give your family peace and strength, and see you through this trial.
“Be not dismayed whatever be-tide, God will take care of you; beneath His wings of love abide, God will take care of you…All you may need He will provide, God will take care of you; nothing you ask will be denied, God will take care of you.”
My prayers and love in Christ Jesus.
    Psalm 91

  64. Charity Says:

My family has been and is continuing to pray for your mom and all of you. I’m so sorry that this is happening to you, but it is a comfort to know that God is good even though we may not understand what He does. I know it must be a great blessing for your mom to be able to see her kids growing in godliness every day and seeking Him first and foremost. What a great legacy for her to leave behind!

  65. Micaela Says:

I’m so sorry - I know how it feels. But praise God that as believers you can rest assured that even though you feel helpless and burdened, you can know that everything rests in His loving, Fatherly hands. I’m praying for you all!

“God often sends me joy through pain,
    Through bitter loss, divinest gain;
Yet through it all - dark days and bright -
I know my Father leads aright.”

  66. Wayne White Says:

I lost my mother in August and although I am much older than you guys…it hurts still now. However the timing was indeed Gods. I had to accept a great loss but an even greater responsibility was to be the man she raised and nothing less. No low expectations accepted, despite the feelings of wanting the cup to pass …..I had to drink. Nevertheless my mission must be accomplished. Your ministry has challenged yet again…my mission….”I am a rebel without a pause for low expectations” ….and so are my sons.

P.S. When you have surrendered to doing all that is right to do…you have truly placed your life in Gods hands and what He does is never wrong. I too will pray for what I believe is a sweet mother and Wife to your family.

  67. Rachel Says:

Oh guys…your mom looks so at peace…and so joyful. That’s such an incredible blessing. You will all be in our prayers…

    ~2 Cor 1….

  68. Anna Says:

As heart wrenching as it must be, you are very blessed to have a mom who looks forward with joy to that day when she will see our loving Savior, when all her pain will vanish, and she will bask in the glory of the Risen King. She will be cradled in the arms of Jesus for all eternity. And heaven will look sweeter than it ever has before! I will be praying for you guys and your family. Thank you so much for following God’s call to ministry and blessing all of us!!!

  69. Lei Ann Says:

Your mom is such a blessing to us, both through her own life and through the lives she has helped shape in each of you. What a beautiful woman, with an even more beautiful testimony! We continue to lift you in our prayers.

  70. Claire Says:

What sweet photos! Your mom is radiantly beautiful. I will keep praying for her and for all of you. May the grace of God continue to sustain each of you!

  71. Kathryn Says:

I am praying for your whole family. What more can I say, but I am crying with you. Know that there are many people all over the world praying for you each day. Words are never enough at times like this, but maybe knowing about our prayers will somehow help you through this difficult time.

May God continue to sustain you.
    In Him,
    Kathryn

  72. Hope Says:

    Harris Family,

My nine siblings and I went through a similar challenge in 2004. After 2 years of victory over a stage IV diagnosis of breast cancer, our mother and Pastor, went to claim her mansion in Heaven.

She fought and prayed harder than anyone I have ever known. But in the end when she could barely speak, she said two things that I will never forget - the first to my dad when he told her to keep fighting. Her reply was, “We’ve already won!” The second, to my Grandparents…”Everlasting Peace.”

The loss is not something we even try to rationalize. Of course we miss her tremendously, but we know, as she noted in her prayer journal many many times, she is “leaping and dancing before the Throne” fully restored to perfect health and we will see her again. Her reunion with her Heavenly Father is not something I could imagine taking away from her even if it meant an eternity on Earth with us.

Your mom has the most wonderful homecoming awaiting her! Her earthly body may have betrayed her, but she, too, will soon be restored to perfect health - leaping and dancing before the Throne!! In the meantime, I pray that God delivers her from pain and suffering, that she is able to transcend the physical realm as she turns her eyes upon Jesus…looking full in His wonderful face…that the things of the world will grow strangely dim…in the light of His GLORY and GRACE!!

I know she and your father have brought you all up well - so you already know all of these things. But I also know a loving reminder goes a long way.

So, I will continue to pray for your family, to receive an extra abundance of God’s loving comfort, encouragement, and most of all, that “The peace of God that surpasses ALL understanding, will keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:7) Don’t allow this challenge to cause you to question or lose your Faith for even a second.

God is already raising you and your mother out of this valley and HE WILL DELIVER ALL THAT HE HAS PROMISED!!

    In Christ’s Love,
    ~Hope

  73. Sarah Beth Says:

Even though I have never met your mother she is clearly an amazing person. Even in these pictures I can tell Mrs. Harris is radiant, and she is obviously finding her strength and joy in Christ Jesus. Your family is definately in our prayers.

    These pictures are beautiful.

my family and I have been praying. The pictures are wonderful! thanks for posting.

  75. Leslie Says:

What a beautiful women and what an amazing legacy she is leaving and going to! God bless you and may the Lord’s love fill your hearts during this sad time for you all.

  76. Rosalyn Says:

I really admire your mom. I believe that whatever God’s plan is, He is glorified that you, as a family, accepts His will graciously and with open hearts. Mrs. Sono is a blessed woman. One because she had lived for Christ, discipled for Christ; and second because she is excited to finally meet her Maker. As Paul said, “…to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”

God is the God of all miracles. Whatever happens, I do believe that it is God’s miracle. =)

  77. alyssa k Says:

sorry to hear that your mum’s going!
about five years ago my oma (grandma) died from cancer but in her last days she accepted christ again so i know i’ll be seeing her again.

god will make things good cause he gives and takes away.
    blessings
    Alyssa k

  78. Lori Says:

I was just looking over you site because I am interested in your book Do hard things for my son who will be 13 next month. I came across the post about your mom. This must be so difficult for your family. I need to say though that this sickness is not from God, I hope you are not thinking that. God is good ALL the time! In the bible it says in John 10:10 that satan has come to steal, kill and destroy. But Jesus came so that we could have Abundant Life, sickness is not abundant life!!! Read Luke 11;11-13. We would not think of making our children sick to teach them a lesson. Why do people think then that God who loves us so much more would make us sick to teach us??? When Jesus walked this earth He HEALED, he NEVER turned anyone away or told them it is my will that you be sick and die, it is NOT in the bible. Hebrews 13:8 says Jesus Christ the SAME, yesterday, today and forever!! GODS WILL IS FOR US TO BE WELL, HEALED and WHOLE!! Read 3 John 2 . Jesus bore our sickness and disease when he was flogged so we would not have to!!! Isaiah 53:5. In the New Testament 1 Peter 2;24 states that by whose stripes we WERE HEALED. Its already been provided!!!! If you don’t believe me get alone with the Lord and ask Him. It is His will for your mom to be well, not sick. I recommend a book by Dodie Olsteen, Healed of cancer. She was diagnosed with cancer and given weeks to live and that was over 30 years ago!!!! She is alive and well today. Go to Keith Moores web site, Moorelifeministires I believe. He has a whole series on Gods Will to Heal, you can download them from his site for free. Oh I pray you don’t buy into the lie that has just seemed to engulf those who call themselves beleivers that sickness and disease is from God, it is not!!!!

  79. Tammy Says:

I lost my mom when I was 5 years old. Many years later after being angry at God for causing this to happen I accepted Christ as my Savior. How nice that you were all brought up in a Christian home and know that when your mom leaves this earth that someday you will see her again.

  80. Sarah Says:

I am so sorry! I will be praying for you. god be with you!

  81. Josh S. Says:

I spent last week with your brother, Isaac, at TeenPact Survival. We’ve all been praying for you guys ever since. Grace and peace!

  83. Elissa C. Says:

I’m praying for you guys and your family.

  84. KP Says:

There are a host of us who have been through heartache ourselves who are asking for God’s comfort to surround your family. You are continuing to find, as all His children do, that the sweetness of His strength is worth the pain that requires it. Thank you for allowing us to share in the privilege of praying, and for letting us see His beauty more clearly through your response to His inexplicable, but always perfect dealings. Like “treasure in earthen vessels,” you are reflecting Christ’s victory in a profound and moving way. That’s an untold encouragement to me and to others.

As another commenter noted - the radiance of the Lord shines in your mom’s face in those pictures.

Blessings and peace to your precious mother.

  85. Millie B Says:

Alex and Brett, I just finished reading Do Hard Things yesterday and went to your website today for the first time. I am so sorry to hear about your mother, Sono, but pray that God’s absolute grace is with you and your family. Her photographs radiate with the love of Christ. I am praying for a wonderful miracle and that she will be healed.

I lost my own mother in 2001 after a very short illness. I had prayed fervently that she would be healed and when God took her home I knew that she had been healed and was in heaven. I was so filled with gratitude for every day that we had before her death and to this day she remains ‘the wind beneath my wings’. Your mother has been God’s wonderful servant in the love and caring she has given your family. I pray that your hearts are overflowing with gratitude and with the peace of Christ that surpasses any understanding this world knows.

I pray that you continue to fulfill God’s destiny in your lives.

  86. Madison Porterfield Says:

    Praying…

  87. Katie W. Says:

As many others have already said , and much more eloquently than I, your family will be in my prayers and especially your Mother.

And a word of encouagement- My own Mother has not only been healed of breast cancer once , but twice ! The first time was when she was pregnant with my little sister and the second time was last summer.I thank God every day she is still with us.

May the Lord make His face shine upon you and give you His peace.

  88. Austin Sheyda Says:

I am definitely praying for you all as you go through this trial that God has given to you. I pray that it will help you grow in Christ and that you will always see Him for comfort!
    I love you all

  89. Jessica T. Says:

I am praying for you all!

I don’t pretend to even remotely know what you’re going through, but I do know a promise God made. It says: “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11, ESV) I’m positive you’ve heard this a hundred times before, but it’s so true! Even if your mom doesn’t live on earth much longer, she will be with her Lord, Redeemer, and Father.

I don’t really know what else to say… I have been and will be praying!

    God bless you all!

May you trust in Him with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. God bless your whole family! I pray the love of God will be intense around you.

With much appreciation for your ministry,

Hi there all, just read about your Mom and I want you to know that I (my Mom and Dad too) are praying hard for your family. Praise Yahweh (God) that she is now free of suffering and with her heavenly Father. No matter how much, even though we have never met her we may grieve she is now gone from you all. At least she is now happy and free of sickness.

Praying for you all: Hayley S.

My thoughts and prayers are with you in your great loss. It nust have been so much easier for your mother to leave peacefully, knowing how surrendered to Christ her children are.

Ya’ll are in my prayers. I’m deeply saddened to hear about your mother, but am overjoyed that she will be with the Lord soon. We (on this side of Heaven) can never understand the will of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Praying that God will give you comfort.

CAncer is a hard thing to deal with……i know. My brother had it when he was in 3rd grade (he is now in 7th). Oviously if he is still in school he survuved it, but through his treatments i began to get to know the kids (especially the girls so i could talk to them as a friend i have had for a while) my age or a little bit younger. Alot of them did not make it. Then in April 2009, my grandfather died. He had cancer, although he did not die from the cancer, it was VERY difficult to watch him fight that horrible disease. I can only imagine what you must be going through. God bless and you and your family are in my prayers.

  99. Jazzmin Says:

Oh my goodness, I would have never guessed that she had cancer! I read the poem called “You need a mother” or something like that and looked at her picture and was saying “Man that is one beautiful woman.” And here i go scrolling down and I read this! She looks excellent! Not only for a woman battling cancer, or even for an elderly lady! She just looks good! Plain and simple. The most beautiful woman I have ever seen (after my own mother, of course haha). And while it is sad that your amazing mother will be leaving, be excited that she will be with the Lord! It makes sense that she has to be taken away from here, after all someone that precious must be desired by the Lord. It makes perfect sense that he’d want her back in his kingdom. Just be happy for her and remember that even after she’s gone, she will always be in your hearts and looking down on you from above with the Lord helping him protect you all.
