rebelling against low expectations

What are good Scripture passages to help me rest?

W

ANONYMOUS WRITES: I struggle with having terrible dreams whenever I try to sleep. Because of that I fear sleeping because I don’t want to have bad dreams. Reading the Bible and talking to God before I go to sleep really helps calm me down and silence my fears. Do you have any suggestions of Bible verses that talk about fear and resting in God?

  • Romans 8:38-39
    Psalm 4:8
    Psalm 27:1-3
    Psalm 9
    Psalm 121:7-8
    Isaiah 43:2
    Matthew 6:25-34
    Philippians 4:10-20

  • Matthew 11:28
    Psalm 23

One of my favorite verses is Deuteronomy 31:6
“Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or terrified of them, for the Lord your God goes with you. He will never leave you nor forsake you.

  • I find Psalm 23 to be very comforting. It is one of passages i memorized and say to myself. Everyone else has good verses as well!!

I will be praying for you!

  • Isaiah 41:9-10
“You whom I have taken from the ends of the earth, and called from its farthest regions, and said to you, ‘You are My servant, I have chosen you and have not cast you away: Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’”

  • Olivia pretty much said. . .um. . .everything. But other than just straight up Bible verses, I think listening to worship music, sermons, or like Bible memory music could be helpful. I don’t know. Just an idea. And btw. I totally know what bad dreams feel like. What we think about before we fall asleep does affect our dreams, so if we’re filling our minds with good thoughts instead of trying to stop thinking bad thoughts that can also be helpful.

  • Here’s a little testimony to go with my verse. 😉

Isaiah 41:10 “Do not fear for I am with you. Do not anxiously look about you for I am your God. I will help you. Surely I will strentghen you. Surely I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

I used to fear the dark a LOT as a younger kid…My mom recommended i memorize this verse. So I did and every time I was afraid I would say it to myself over and over; sometimes out loud and sometimes not.
Every time, my fear abated immensely…
Another thing I did with the verse was change the way I word it…I would say it like this, “I will not fear, for You are with me. I will not anxiously look about me for You are my God…etc”. I spoke the verse out loud and made it personal for myself…
Saying it like that made it so much more real to me…I promise you, every single time I said it my fear decreased and became less and less…and usually disappeared entirely after saying it over and over… =)

Hope this helps and is encouraging! <3

  • I think I should mention I didn’t just happen to know all of those verses off the top of my head XD
I actually skimmed through the section of verses about comfort on scripturetyper and those were the ones I thought applied well 🙂

  • This may sound strange, but I used to have terrible night terrors and dreams every night and couldn’t figure it out. I happened on a Christian doctor speaking about the side effects of aspartame which is in a lot of artificially sweetened products. He mentioned that it could cause nightmares or night terrors along with a host of other devastating side effects. I was a Diet Coke drinker at the time and so I quit immediately and my terrible dreams stopped immediately. Make sure that it isn’t a physical issue.

Aside from that, I always enjoy the Psalms. I often fall asleep listening to them and any other scripture.

    God bless you.

  • Psalms 🙂
Also, I will sometimes get super scared before I fall asleep. I found that spending some time listening to Christian music before bed helps. I also like to draw during that time. I do like hand lettering of bible berses, hymns, quots. All that stuff.

  • Psalm 23 and Philippians 2. Those are two of my favorite passages and they help me ‘de-stress.’ Another good idea is prayer or journaling. 🙂 Sorry this is happening to you, Anonymous!

  • John 14:27
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give unto you. Not as the world giveth do I give unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

    2 Corinthians 12:9
“But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

  • I used to struggle with sleeping problems too. I, like you, would read my Bible and I also would recite all of the verses I’d memorized in my head. One verse that really helped me was Psalm 4:8. Hope this helps!

    Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lie down and sleep,
For You alone, O Lord, make me to dwell in safety.

  • “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High.God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early. The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted. The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Come, behold the works of the LORD, what desolations he hath made in the earth. He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire.Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.” – The Psalmist (Psalm 46 KJV)

  • “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Matthew 11: 28-30

  • 2 Timothy 1:7
    Hebrews 13:6
    Psalm 23:4
    Psalm 71:21

By the way, if you sleep on your stomach you won’t have any dreams. It sounds weird, but it works. 😉

  • Lol, not sure about that one, @Abbyallen1:disqus. I always sleep on my stomach, and I certainly dream!

  • KJV Isaiah 26:3

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.

  • I had fear problems too. I way I got over it was just spending time in prayer and in the word. Time with my Father took my fears and replaced it with joy! 🙂

  • I always read Psalms when I am having trouble with different things. These are a few of the verses that I love. 🙂
    Psalm 55:16-17
As for me, I will call upon God; and the Lord shall save me.
Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.
    Psalm 27:1&14
The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.
    Psalm 31:2-3, 5, 7 & 9
Bow down thine ear to me; deliver me speedily: be thou my strong rock, for an house of defense to save me.
For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name’s sake lead me, and guide me.
Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O Lord God of truth.
I will be glad and rejoice in thy mercy: for thou hast considered my trouble; thou hast known my soul in adversities.
Have mercy upon me, O Lord, for I am in trouble: mine eye is consumed with grief, yeah, my soul and my belly.
    Psalm 32:7
Thou art my hiding place: thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah.

I hope these are as encouraging to you as they are to me!
    God bless! 🙂

  • I don’t remember where it is but it says, “Be still and know that I am God” was it Psalms?
